The Discord server for The Piazza

THE DISCORD SERVER FOR THE PIAZZA:
The Piazza has it's own server on Discord. It is considered an extension of these forums, rather than an alternative to the forums.

THIS IS STILL AN EXPERIMENTAL SERVICE:
As you may know, The Piazza opened a Discord server for one-day, with the intention of it only being open for the 10th Birthday Chat and there was a call for the server to stay open.

The server is now open on an experimental basis. It's not an open server - at this time - it's restricted to forum members for now. But we might schedule some special events (like the Birthday Chat) in the future, which are run on channels that are open to non-forum members.

I've already sent invites to let in the people in Gravesguardian's topic who had added me as a contact on Discord. If you want to be added, please post "add me" in this topic to get an invite.

DISCORD SERVER CHANNELS:
There are three types of channels we are considering using on the server:
  • Open channels - Channels like our 10th Birthday Chat - which are open to non-members for a limited amount of time,
  • Closed channels - Channels open to forum members, that stay open all the time and
  • Private channels - Channels for specialist projects (this would be similar to the private forums that Threshold Magazine and Wildspace: The Spelljammer Fanzine have).
We are not planning on having a lot of text and voice channels at this time. That may be reviewed if the Discord server becomes very popular.

EVENTS ON THE DISCORD SERVER:
For the time being just pick a day and time and post here to let people know when you are going to turn up.

(You are encouraged to use Time and Date.com's Event Time Announcer - or another similar service - to translate times from your own timezone to everyone else's timezones. And don't forget that not everyone uses Daylight Saving Time and that not every country switches from DST to regular time on the same day.)

So, does that mean that stuff posted here could be considered....

.... Discordant notes...?

I didn't realize this would go on for 3 hours. I might be able to hop on near the end.

A small scheduling suggestion. Running events on Saturday evening UK time will make them on the weekend for everyone. While I understand people will run events when they are free and that is to be expected. However, if you can run on a Saturday evening UK time then you might have more folks pop in.

I figured I'd make it a drop-in thing, that I could do while getting some other stuff done.

That's a great suggestion, and one I'd recommend to the other people who said they wanted a Discord, so they could chat to people.

However, I have a slot in AuldDragon's live-streamed Spelljammer game which runs on a Saturday evening UK time (usually 17.00-21.00 BST) so if something is in the optimal time, I can't join in. (I could probably come in at the end of someone else's event.)

This one is going to be more of an ice-breaker. :)

PM sent.

Don't forget to change your Discord name to match your forum name, so we all know who you are. :)

Is there an alternative to relying on PMs? I know we want to focus on forum members, and PMs guarantee that. But is there a concern about the possibility of someone getting an invite who isn't a member? If that happens, could we gently direct them back to the forum?

Just thinking out loud. :)

It's kind of a beta test at the moment.

I really want to get the people who requested a Discord in the Does The Piazza need/deserve it's own fulltime Discord server? topic onboard and see what sort of schedule they want to meet on, rather than invite in a bunch of people who have never been on the forums...at this time.

Speaking of which, do we want to decide on the next date/time, now? Perhaps we should try setting a dedicated topic, this time? We have a forum filled with Mystara experts -- I'd love to have someone explain why Mystara is the best (from their point of view) setting to run D&D games in.

Any volunteers?

Maybe we should lock that other topic (as it has served it's purpose) and start a new topic with a survey that has all seven days of the week on it, to see if we can work out what days work best for most people.

Good idea but be sure to specify that the day of the week is in GMT so people can figure out which day is which for them.

Sure, but I'm not even thinking of proposing a time at this point.

I jumped in with a suggestion of my own (partially to see if anyone would turn up :P ) and I think that it would work better if someone did that, rather than looking for someone else to volunteer to talk about a topic they might not be an expert in.

For example, if you were going to propose a time, Tim, I'd think you might want to talk about 13th Age and Escalation...at a time that works for you?

And if Coronoides wanted to propose a time, he might want to talk to us about Council of Wyrms, when he is awake.

If people come along and want to talk about other stuff, that's fine too. It's about building a fire under the thing, at the moment.

If nobody has suggested anything in the next few weeks, I might talk to people about Spelljammer and what I would like to see in a 3rd Edition conversion. :)
