Difficulty logging in and posting

Post by shesheyan » Sat Nov 17, 2018 3:25 pm

This week it has been very difficult to log in The Piazza and when I was able to log, my posts often generated «invalid format» warnings. Yesterday was truly horrible. What is causing this?

I've been having a few issues, off and on, since October 20th.

It seems to be connected to Session IDs.

We are looking into it.

I found that clearing cookies helped.

I've been advised that one of our cookie settings was wrong.

I've fixed that, but it's stopped me from being able to log into my Big Mac account (unless I use private browsing).

I thik that Tim's solution of clearing cookies would fix that...for me, but I don't fancy having to talk dozens of people through clearing their cookies (or force them to delete undamaged cookies) so I'm going to rename the cookie that The Piazza uses.

Renaming our cookie is going to force everyone to log on again. You can tell your browser to keep you logged in, and it should store your password in the new cookie inside your browser.

Hopefully this will get rid of the intermittent issue of people not being able to post.

I just got hit with the "login loop."

Clearing cookies didn't help, in my case (MacOSX 10.11.6, Firefaux 63.0.1), but going through a Private Browser window works.

I could not log either, via pc nor phone. I cleared the cookies as suggested in the Facebook group and worked, for now.

Able to log in by going to Incognito mode on Chrome. I'm not comfortable with purging my cache and cookies. Hopefully the log-in loop will be fixed soon.

I got that too.

It started (on my Big Mac) account, after I applied the suggested fix to cookie settings.

I had the same thing with private browsing letting me in, but the normal (Firefox) window sending me around in a loop.

I tried the "Delete all board cookies" link at the bottom of the forum, but that did not work.

In the past we had a similar problem (and I was aware that it wouldn't just be my account) that got solved by changing the name of the cookie that The Piazza sends out. So I tried that again this morning and spent my time Busjamming and Trainjamming to work trying to get onto the forum.

It looks like deleting the individual Piazza cookies (I saw two) fixes things for one person (on one browser). But that's more of a workaround that a fix.

I'm going to talk to the other staff and we will see if we can find a fix that will work for everyone. :)

Don't delete all your cookies. That will stuff up settings you have for other websites that are not wrong. (It bugs me when people tell users to delete all of their cookies. Sometimes it is necessary, but people should always try deleting individual cookies first.)

Google Chrome Help says this:
Delete specific cookies wrote:Delete specific cookies

Delete cookies from a site
  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. At the top right, click More More and then Settings.
  3. At the bottom, click Advanced.
  4. Under "Privacy and security," click Content settings.
  5. Click Cookies and then See all cookies and site data.
  6. At the top right, search for the website's name.
  7. To the right of the site, click Remove
Hope that helps.

It's probably best to do that in another tab, so you can refresh the Piazza tab and see if you can log in again.

I too just got the "logon loop" today. Clearing the piazza cookies did not work, so I bit the bullet and cleared the lot (Firefox) - I am now logged n and posting, so I think it is cookies, just not ones that claim to be linked to the piazza.

Incidentally thank-you for all your hard work keeping this running!

I followed the instructions for Chrome, and I managed to log in and post this message (hopefully?) In the list of saved cookies, there was a set of cookies from "thepiazza.org.uk" and another set from "www.thepiazza.org.uk". Deleting the first set did nothing. Deleting the second set allowed me to log back in. Not sure if that means anything, but if it can help debug a few things ^^

I didn't do anything and it works fine now. Which indicates the problem was server side not client side.

I was just experiencing the login loop as well and these instructions fixed it.

I'm so glad I noticed this thread on the main page and could read it!

I should've been clearer with my comment. I didn't delete all of my cookies, but did delete all of my cookies for the Piazza. I seem to recall that there were 7 cookies between the two different forms of the domain name (with and without "www" at the beginning).

Thanks for that.

We changed the cookie settings (to try to get rid of that issue that was stopping people from posting) and that created the problem with the login loop.

So we renamed the cookie to try to make the old cookie get ignored, and make everyone pull down a new cookie.

That didn't work (as you know) and people have ended up deleting cookies anyway.

I'm guessing that there might be a cookie-related problem in the www.thepiazza.org.uk cookie that didn't get fixed by the changes we have made so far.

We are going to need to do some further investigation. If we need to tinker with the cookies some more, that might force people to delete cookies again, so we might want to look into this carefully before doing something that messes with users.

(And we still need to find out if the cookie changes are going to get rid of the problem mentioned in the original post.)

The bug was affecting me yesterday; I couldn't log in on Firefox. I am now on IE for the moment, and I got in (obviously), but I don't know if Firefox still has the problem.
