Have you tried clearing the cookies using the instructions posted upthread?
Given that my version of Firefox doesn't appear to have a Tools menu, I did not find those instructions terribly helpful.

I fail to understand how having an outdated cookie can make it impossible for me to login at all. The cookie is supposed to *keep* me logged in, isn't it? It's like having a seat belt which keeps throwing you out of your car; I don't get how this can happen.
Your cookie sits on your computer and your browser sends a copy to the server when you browse to the server.

It's more like having a membership card that is torn in half than a seatbelt.

When you come to the forum your browser keeps showing the damaged membership card, the forum keeps asking for a valid membership card and your browser keeps showing the damaged membership card. Each time the forum is asking you for the valid membership card your browser is doing the exact same thing.

(This is an automated process that works almost all of the time, but when it goes wrong and you get a loop like this, you have to do something to break the loop, because computers are stupid and only do what they are told to do.)

When we worked out this was happening we tried renaming the cookie at our end in the hopes that your browser would totally ignore the old cookie, think it didn't have a cookie at all and create a new one. We have done this before, with no problems, but it didn't work this time.

That's like us changing from 2nd Edition membership cards to 3rd Edition membership cards and your browser being a grognard and showing the old torn up card instead of the new shiney card.

Some people say to throw away every membership card in your browser when something like this happens. That's not necessary, as all the other membership cards have nothing to do with The Piazza and never ever get shown to The Piazza.

But we do need to get rid of that damaged membership card that your browser keeps showing the forum, so that your browser says "I don't have a membership card" and the server says "let me print one out for you".

The "Private Browsing" option works, as it's like you are visiting The Piazza wearing a dark overcoat, sunglasses and a false moustach and you tell the bouncer on the door that you left your membership card at home and ask him to look you up on the member list.

(With Private Browsing your browser creates a new identity, always asks for new cookies and destroys them all when you close the Private Browsing window.)

This is the best explanation I could possibly have received

Using Firefox I was able to search for all cookies containing "piazza"; I found two. I deleted both of those, and I could log in again in a non-private window.

Thanks for all the hard work you gals and guys put into keeping this forum working!

Thanks! Yes, I did draw it (using Inkscape), but it's based off the "Mantisfolk" in Rich Berlew's Autumn volume of A Monster for Every Season.

Maybe that style is what caught my eye. I love Order of the Stick. :)

Wouldn't it technically be a 5e membership card....? ;)

True. I've forgotten how many times The Piazza has moved servers now, but it is more than 3 times.

So, I had the same difficulties again today, and clearing the cookies did the trick again.
