Forum Ranks (and posting stats for each rank) *spoilers*

Postby Big Mac » Mon Jul 21, 2008 7:39 pm

A number of us have been wondering about the forum ranks, so I've decided to keep an eye on the forum and try to work out when they kick in.

But if you don't want the fun to be spoiled I suggest you hit your back button now.

SPOILERS - FORUM RANK STATS GIVEN IN SECOND POST!

If you are still here then scroll down to the next post for a reverse engineered list of forum ranks.

This white space is intentional. This is your last warning.

Ug! I've just realised this topic is a double post. However, the other thread does have a mistake in it.

My ubernerd-research into forum rankings must therefore continue. :ugeek:

EDIT: Maybe a moderator can merge my thread into the other thread.

Number of people at each Forum Rank as of 26 Jul 2008

Postby Big Mac » Sat Jul 26, 2008 5:49 pm

Number of people of each rank:

Just for my own personal interest, I thought I would record how many people we have of each forum rank. Then I can look back at these stats in the future and see how each rank is expanding. For the purposes of statistics I'm ignoring Ashtagon's Hierarch rank and treating him as if he was a regular member. (Where I know the number of posts within a rank, I'll mention that in brackets.)

Number of people at each Forum Rank as of 26 Jul 2008:
Stone Giant (600-799) = 1
Hill Giant (450-599) = 2
Troll (300-449) = 3
Ogre (200-299) = 3
Bugbear (125-199) = 6
Gnoll (80-124) = 6
Hobgoblin (45-79) = 8 (Note: 4 Hobgoblins are on the 1st page and 4 on the 2nd page)
Orc (20-44) = 13
Goblin (5-19) = 38 (Note: 8 Goblins are on the 2nd page and 25 on the 3rd page and 5 on the 4th page)
Kobolds (0-4) = 120 (Note: 20 Kobolds are on the 4th page, 25 on the 5th page, 25 on the 6th page, 25 on the 7th page and 25 on the 8th page)

EDIT: Missing rank ranges added in (1 Jan 2009).

I realize such a pyramidal repartition is normal, but still I wonder why so many people have subscribed yet have posted less than 5 times, not to mention that many have no posts at all. The boards can be read anonymously (there's nothing hidden, right?), so why go to the trouble of registering?
Besides, we're not ogres (despite some of our ranks...), we welcome new contributors and new ideas!

The URL of this forum did change. No redirect got put on the old URL and the http://www.lajzar.co.uk/ homepage does not mention this forum. So there might be a few people who signed up to The Piazza, missed the short notice announcement about the move and now think this forum is offline. But that number would shirk over time.

I think that some people "pre-register" their names to stop someone else using them. For example BOZ is the name of a guy that has an account over on the ENWorld forums. (I'm not sure if it is the same BOZ.) BOZ used to be very active with the conversions over there, but recently he has been getting D&D articles on Wikipedia up to scratch. He was looking for people to help him find information about D&D and I pointed him here. So the BOZ here, might be the same BOZ there.

I'm sure some other people just set up an account, so they can post a link to their website.

I imagine that with any forum, there will be members who sign up, hoping to get in on a lot of conversations & then for one reason or another, not come back for a variable period of time. I'm like this, at DF & here to some extent.

My time is taken up elsewhere on the interwebs, but I swing by to check things out. Some others (-5 posts) may have forgotten about this forum, or lost interest. I know I bookmarked DF when I first joined over 2 years ago, but I lost it, and when I found it again a little over a year ago, I started posting immediately!

There will be others in the middling range who have only a few hours a day/week to check their favorite forums (I fit into this category) and others who can (either at work, or work-at-homes) who can check in anytime they want & post as much as they want. I drive a truck for a living, so, no, I do not have interwebs at work. ;)

To be fair, the home page for the forum itself within that old url contains a redirect. Since the old domain name was never intended to be about gaming stuff, I never made any mention whatsoever of The Piazza on its root page.

Just when I finished working out the people at each forum rank, we get a new Peasant rank. So here is a repost

Number of people at each Forum Rank as of after the new Peasant rank change on 26 Jul 2008:
Stone Giant (600-799) = 1
Hill Giant (450-599) = 2
Troll (300-449) = 3
Ogre (200-299) = 3
Bugbear (125-199) = 6
Gnoll (80-124) = 6
Hobgoblin (45-79) = 8 (Note: 4 Hobgoblins are on the 1st page and 4 on the 2nd page)
Orc (20-44) = 13
Goblin (5-19) = 38 (Note: 8 Goblins are on the 2nd page and 25 on the 3rd page and 5 on the 4th page)
Kobolds (1-4) = 64 (Note: 20 Kobolds are on the 4th page, 25 on the 5th page and 19 on the 6th page)
Peasant (0) = 56 (Note: 6 Peasants are on the 6th page, 25 on the 7th page and 25 on the 8th page)

Note: Apart from this change, nobody seems to have switched ranks yet.

EDIT: Missing rank ranges added in (1 Jan 2009).

Interesting. I suppose it makes sense to distinguish zero posts from at least one. And the rank itself makes sense, since peasants often can't handle kobolds themselves. (While their stats may suggest that they can handle them, if they could there wouldn't be much for 1st level PCs to do.)

Hmmm, that's a strange rank considering that all other ranks are 'noids (although I guess 'noids can be peasants, and that would be indeed a lowly rank  ). Is there no lower 'noid than kobold? :?

Since it was fairly recent, I remember becoming a bugbear at 125 posts, FWIW.

Yes, I'm also pretty sure I became a bugbear at 125. Besides, we level up at round numbers, so if you have it narrowed down to 125-127...
But I guess you want to see it for yourself, right? :P

Yes, indeed.

A bugbear philosopher? Well, while I'm trained in the analytic tradition, I would imagine a bugbear philosopher would enjoy Nietzsche's Twilight of the Idols. After all, the subtitle is How to Philosophize with a Hammer (although they may prefer morning stars).
