I assume so...they like it cold. Gets too warm and they get lethargic and start quoting Star Wars...

I would'a figured that they melt if they don't hibernate in the summer. Quoting Star Wars isn't a sign of white dragons needing to hibernate, since I've been known to do so myself, and I'm only an ogre!
(For 97 more posts anyways, but who's counting!)

Edit: But then again, I also quote "Shrek", "Time Bandits", "Princess Bride", Monty Python in general & Douglas Adams...

So, I'm a well rounded ogre! Image

Blast! I leveled up and missed it! ( at self)

Now I've got to go back to stalking Havard, so I can see when he levels up. I hope I don't miss his transition... :o

...otherwise I'll have to spend several months poking Thorf with questions that speed up his posting rate!

Re: Number of people at each Forum Rank as of 12 Mar 2009

Post by Big Mac » Sun May 10, 2009 10:04 pm

It has only been a couple of days under two months since the last count, but with me now having a higher rank* than Havard (for the second time in Piazza history) and three new giants, I thought it might be fun to do another count.

* = Huh? Eek! Damn! Blast! Curses! Arg! (See my last post for an explanation for this geeky-grumbling about going up in rank.)

I'm including the last counts from the 12 Mar 2009 count - so that you can see what is going up and down, but bear in mind that pretty much everyone is going up in rank (so in a lot of cases the new numbers reflect the number of people coming up the ranks to replace the old people of that rank).

Number of people at each Forum Rank as of 12 Mar 2009:
Black Dragon ((2727-2756)-?) = 1 (new rank for this count)
White Dragon (2000-(2727-2756)?) = 1 (was 2)
Storm Giant (1500-1999) = 0 (was 0)
Cloud Giant (1250-1499) = 2 (was 0)
Fire Giant (1000-1249) = 1 (was 2)
Frost Giant (800-999) = 2 (was 1)
Stone Giant (600-799) = 4 (was 4)
Hill Giant (450-599) = 3 (was 2)
Troll (300-449) = 3 (was 5)
Ogre (200-299) = 14 (was 7) (Note: 8 Ogres are on the 1st page and 6 on the 2nd page)
Bugbear (125-199) = 12 (was 17)
Gnoll (80-124) = 13 (was 8) (Note: 7 Gnolls are on the 2nd page and 6 on the 3rd page)
Hobgoblin (45-79) = 19 (was 15)
Orc (20-44) = 32 (was 26) (Note: 25 Orcs are on the 4th page and 7 on the 5th page)
Goblin (5-19) = 71 (was 74) (Note: 18 Goblins are on the 5th page, 25 on the 6th page, 25 on the 7th page and 3 on the 8th page)
Kobolds (1-4) = 108 (was 98) (Note: 22 Kobolds are on the 8th page, 25 on the 9th page, 25 on the 10th page, 25 on the 11th page and 11 on the 12th page)
Peasant (0) = 171 (was 93) (Note: 14 Peasants are on the 12th page, 25 on the 13th page, 25 on the 14th page, 25 on the 15th page, 25 on the 16th page, 25 on the 17th page, 25 on the 18th page and 7 on the 19th page)

One thing to bear in mind this time, is that the The Wizard of Ash went on an anti-spam purge and cast a magical spell that killed off all of the Peasants that had not been toiling the soil... (...OK, I mean ones that had not been posting). Despite that purge, we have a lot more members than last time. (Actually, I might ask the boss to kill the Peasants before my next count as it would speed the job up a bit! )

Looking at the stats, three of the lower ranks have fallen in numbers, but the rest are getting bigger in numbers (or holding stable). The Peasants have been kicked off of page 11 and are nearly halfway down page 12. The Kobolds have been kicked off of page 7 and are a small distance down page 8. The Goblins have been kicked off of page 4 and have retreated about a third of the way down page 5. The Orcs have been kicked off of page 3 and are currently clinging onto the very top of page 4. The Hobgoblins have been kicked off of page 2 and have retreated about a third of the way down page 3. The Bugbears have finally been kicked off of page 1 and have retreated about a third of the way down page 2. Ogres are now the least powerful race on page 1, but are still holding on well.

I think you can see (from these snapshots) how The Piazza has now pretty much matured. There is growth in many ranks, but shrinkage in a few others. Overall, I think the community is growing, but if you keep looking at the ranks that have shrunk this time, you will probably see a bubble of rising-users that cause the same drop in the next rank (in the near future). I think that is probably a bit more healty. We are still growing, but it is not the sort of "gold rush" growth that we had at the begining. In fact, people now have the choice of the restored forums back at WotC, so the continued growth is probably more down to the quality of the other users here, rather than a lack of other options.

As usual I think the top two posters (myself and the other guy who is a rank behind me chowing down on my dust  ) are still throwing off the stats for the top of the rank system, so you might still need to "ignore us" when working out how many "high posters" we have. Looking at this another way, as I suggested last time, we now have 2 dragons and 12 giants (vs 2 dragons and 9 giants on 12 Mar 2009). I think that puts things in better proportion.

Since it's probably 2750, you just have to watch Havard closely for, what, the next hour or so

OK, so where are the boundaries for Dragon Turtle (Havard, 2632)?

And Big Mac gets his wish... he is a Giant Space Hamster!!

Eeek! That definatly comes under the category of be careful what you wish for... :o

And Thorf is a Cartomancer (whatever one of those is :? ). So my backup plan of watching his stats is out of the window.

I've changed my mind - I want to be a Radiant Dragon.

Well, as you technically are now the forum's highest ranking (normal) poster, I'll be stalking you and poking you with that stick that I was reserving for Thorf!

This will be harder to follow now that you've been given the honorary title of Giant Space Hamster and Thorf that of Cartomancer; and of course Ash was always Hierarch. Were we running out of upper ranks?

I have plenty of additional ranks available. I just didn't want therm all used up by next week, plus, I wanted to avoid having huge gaps in the numbers of people at each rank. And... giant space hamsters? What's not to like?
