OD&D Balrog

Post by DMBob » Sat Dec 13, 2014 12:07 am

This creature can be found in the original M&T booklet(No.2) of the original D&D set but was removed swiftly when EGG and TSR were threatened by the Tolkein estate over IP issues. If you are lucky enough to have one of those (earliest of) printings, you are indeed one of the fortunate ones.

For those of use able only to obtain later printings (minus the Balrog), it is difficult finding information regarding it. Comparison to the Demon type VI in AD&D's MM appears to be our closest proximation of what it might have actually been.

But what are the differences?
Anyone have the full stats on the OD&D Balrog, and would you share them with us?

I posted the OD&D stats for Balrogs here: http://blackmoor.mystara.net/forums/vie ... =89&t=8307

I have not had the time to compare them to the later Demon Type IV yet...

Supplement III, Eldritch Wizardry, introduces the six types of demons, and explicitly states Balrog as Type VI (see p. 12). It even re-lists the exact same stats from Volume II, Monsters & Treasure, under the name Type VI (see p. 27 and p. 33).

A while back I made a Balrog Reference Sheet for those of us with the later OD&D printings. It can be downloaded & printed & should fit in your OD&D box.

Dave Arneson actually allowed Balrog characters in his original Blackmoor Campaign, and one adventure featured a city surrounded by Balrogs. Epic stuff.
