Yes I am heading to actual play, and could accomodate a core book character but...
1) Play will be in RL at my local store so unless you like in Melbourne Australia... Sorry.
2) I’ll be finishing my first draft conversion of all 3 CoW to 5e first
3) I have finish two other current campaigns first.
I expect to begin my campaign mid-2019 at the earliest, maybe 2020. Yes I do generally plan that far ahead.

On the up side this means that I will continue to release CoW material for some time. The draft conversion of book 2 is nearly done and will be available to you all soon (weeks). After that I’ll start converting the adventures of book 3 including monsters and NPCs many of which will end up in threads here to get feedback and for your use. Someone could use this stuff to run a play-by post. If so I could play too! :D

I have some degree of interest running a dragon-centric campaign, but I would just use 3E since that's what I'm familiar with (the info in Draconomicon covers most of what I would need to know). I do like 5E, and I approve in theory of you working on a conversion document, but I'm not up to the effort of reading and incorporating a bunch of extra rules, especially while they're still being playtested and revised and such...I am not of that ilk, mentally speaking. I can barely deal with my own homebrew; the way my brain hardcodes information and then forgets the source, I really prefer to rely on officially published sourcebooks. Even if I deem them to be handling a certain subject "wrong", I still stick very close to the baseline until I have a very firm grasp on what ought to be changed, and if the rules for something don't exist, I more likely just leave that thing out of the game entirely, rather than using homebrews.

3e is certainly the edition other than 2e which most easily accommodates CoW all the rules are written in: draconomicon, dragon magic, and Dragon issue 320. The only issue is published rules only cover to Young or Juvenile age catagories.
