13th Age Dragonlance Adventure Path!

Post by Into the Unknown » Tue Feb 19, 2019 2:32 am

Heyo! So, I have a weekly TTRPG group, and I've been thinking ahead about some of the adventures I've always wanted to run but have just never had the chance. And one of those APs is the Age of Mortals, set in the Dragonlance setting. So, my question is this: do you think Dragonlance would translate well to the 13A rules system? Because I totally wanna adapt it and run it! But using the 3.0 rules system sounds dreadful to me. Thoughts? Concerns?

I'm not familiar with the Age of Mortals – I took a multi-decade break from D&D between early 2e and 4e. I think you could certainly tell interesting stories using 13th Age in Krynn. Bigger than life heroes fighting back the darkness is something that 13th Age excels at, and Dragonlance has its share of tales that fit that pattern. I've never run or played any of the Dragonlance modules, however. I wasn't interested in following in the footsteps of the characters I'd already read about in novels. When I did play Dragonlance, it was in Taladas, which has a different feel.

13th Age is pretty flexible, but one of the genres it does best is high heroic fantasy. If that aligns well with Age of Mortals, then I'd absolutely give it a shot. If you have questions about how elements might be represented in 13th Age, feel free to post questions on these forums. You may need to provide some additional context, since I don't own any Age or Mortals material.

Thanks for the feedback! So, you don’t actually play the Company in this. It takes place during the time the novels are happening, but encompasses its own story.

I guess my biggest question would be how to fit thenIcons in without having them be the gods, and how to handle the 3 moons in regards to magic.

If you have 13th Age Glorantha, you might want to take a look at the Runes system, which replaces the Icon system for that setting. While it might not precisely work for your game, it shows that there are other ways to provide player agency benefits without tying them to icons. It's been too long since I last read anything for Dragonlance, so I'm not sure what about the setting could serve as that substitute.

On the other hand, you might still want to use icons in the game, but not simply reskinning the default Dragon Empire icons. I found this blog post where a list of potential icons is provided: http://quasarknight.blogspot.com/2016/0 ... h-age.html.

In regards to the moons, while 13th Age generally doesn't bother with small bonuses or penalties, maybe these are a good fit for your game. Most of what I found on this post seems like it would translate pretty easily to 13th Age: http://www.dlnexus.com/fan/Rules/11136.aspx.

To make it feel like a better fit for 13th Age, I wonder if there's some way to instead tie the moons to a character's backgrounds. The background would be unusual, providing bonuses or penalties depending on the moons' phases. This would make it more of a mechanic that impacted social or exploration phases of play, rather than combat, without completely removing them from play.

You could also place limitations on PCs' spell selection, based on the moons, but take a look at what spells are available first. There aren't nearly as many spells in 13th Age as there are in D&D, and you wouldn't want to all but eliminate a PC's choices. Plus, the spells don't have clear schools defined in 13th Age, so it might require some house rules. I'd likely steer clear of limiting spells, but I do understand that this might be needed in your game to make it truly feel like Krynn.

I searched dragonlanceforums.com and came up with sixteen threads regarding 13th Age. It captured a lot of hearts, there, for a while (before 5e stole a lot of its thunder, I guess).

Great tip! Did any in particular catch your eye?
