Races & cultures

“As you know I am not of Barsoom; your ways are not my ways, and I can only act in the future as I have in the past, in accordance with the dictates of my conscience and guided by the standards of mine own people.” All RPGs base based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' Barsoom stories can be discussed here.

I'll ask for some help from the Encyclopedia Barsoomia to answer your question: https://barsoom.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Barsoom_Races ;)

Nice find!

So the only races on John Carter's Mars seem to be:
  • First Born,
  • Green Martian,
  • Hormad,
  • Kaldane,
  • Kangaroo Men,
  • Lotharians,
  • Okar,
  • Orovar,
  • Red Martian,
  • Therns and
  • White Martian
Does every RPG have rules for these 11 races?

How about the Barsoom clones? Is it obvious which canon race maps to the races in those books?

John Carter, himself was a human. I think that Tarzan also went to Mars, assuming it was the same Mars, so that would be at least two humans.

Havard also mentioned cultures. Are all of these races mono-societies, with a single leadership, or do any of them have different nations?

These are races (or sub-races) and cultures as well.
I limited the list to the races and cultures of Barsoom, as there are other planets and moons in the saga that are not in this list, as they are not from Barsoom.

In the 6th book, there is another human...
Ulysses Paxton: The central character in The Master Mind of Mars. Paxton is a soldier in the First World War who is transported to Barsoom after he is mortally wounded, and becomes the assistant of scientist Ras Thavas.

Tarzan went to Pelucidar, the hollow world, but I don't think he went to Barsoom?

Paxton definitely was another Earth human, however.

Ah, not an ERB story. That explains why I've never heard of it before.

Actually, White Martians is a generic definition that covers three sub-races / cultures:
  • Therns
  • Orovar
  • Lotharians
So... the overall list is actually of 10 races / sub-races / cultures.

I'd like to know more about those worlds. Rather than derail Havard's topic, I thought I would start a new one: Other planets/moons and Barsoom.
