[Barsoom] How many John Carter of Mars RPGs are there?

“As you know I am not of Barsoom; your ways are not my ways, and I can only act in the future as I have in the past, in accordance with the dictates of my conscience and guided by the standards of mine own people.” All RPGs base based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' Barsoom stories can be discussed here.

[Barsoom] How many John Carter of Mars RPGs are there?

Post by Big Mac » Mon Sep 10, 2018 2:10 pm

There has been a request for a Barsoom forum, and I'm still doing research for a Barsoom/John Carter logo that might go onto the forum, but it's struck me that I have no idea how many RPGs were created for Barsoom.

How many bespoke RPGs are there for Barsoom/John Carter or Mars?

How many other RPGs have books (or articles) to allow people to use those systems with the Barsoom setting?

Are there any fan conversions to adapt Barsoom to rules systems where there is no official support?

Are there any retro-clones designed to recreate a Barsoom experience?

In addition to those, we might consider Warriors of Mars from TSR in 1974, although it was more of a miniatures skirmish game.

I didn't know about the 1978 RPG.

Then there is Savage Worlds' Mars, which is pretty much Barsoom with the serial numbers filed off.

I could have sworn there was a D20 Modern replica of Barsoom as well, but I can't find it on this list.

Adamant put out a D20 setting, I think loosely based on Barsoom.

Skirmisher Publishing put out Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Mars: Shadows of a Dying World for D&D 3E/D20. If you follow the link you can buy the book as POD.

Seems like the original Warriors of Mars has an unofficial revised edition : http://www.grey-elf.com/barsoom.pdf

John Carpenter is the director of Halloween, Escape From New York, Starman, The Thing, and many other films. The hero of the Barsoom novels is John Carter.

Ack. Thanks Allen. I've got it fixed now.

(John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars always gets me confused.)

I'm playing this free adaptation of Barsoom https://fightingfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Life_on_Barsoom for AFF2 ruleset (and the AFF2 ruleset by Arion Games is not free, but you need it as well if you are a Director, but, as a Player, downloading the free setting and the free Quickstart Guide is enough).
There are also various Barsoom rulesets without the "Barsoom" logo (I guess for copyright reasons).

EDIT: the title is Life on Barsoom

Warriors of the Red Planet, which is pretty fun TBH

NGL I am enjoying it more than the current Modiphius game

Ah, thanks for pointing this out. I believe this is the D20 version of the Savage Worlds sourcebook I mentioned. I guess Adamant are doing (at least) two systems supporting their Mars setting. And it is clearly heavily inspired by Barsoom.

There was a great 1970's SPI game, John Carter - Warlord of Mars.
https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/336 ... rlord-mars

Like TSR's Warriors of Mars, it was more of a tactical skirmish game with rpg elements, but it came with nice hex maps, a Barsoom map, counters, cards books, etc. In addition to the Rule/scenario book, there was a book which was a backgrounder or the world of Barsoom.

Does anyone remember which issue that was?

Polyhedron 160/Dungeon 101 (it was during the era the two magazines were combined).

Edit: Dungeon 102 also had a little bit of material on creating new worlds and new aliens. Also, the same person who did ILoJ did Adamant's MARS.

Fast Forward Entertainment had Sundered Reaches, which was a D20 Mars with Barsoom-like alien species. It's a bit further afield and would require more adaptation to be a John Carter game (and it had FFE's usual lack of attention to detail), but it's at least tangential to the genre.

So far I'm not seeing anything commercial with "Barsoom" in the name.

I started a new topic to put all this stuff (and more) in good order: viewtopic.php?f=108&t=20860
Did I capture all games currently available?
