Disney's John Carter movie

“As you know I am not of Barsoom; your ways are not my ways, and I can only act in the future as I have in the past, in accordance with the dictates of my conscience and guided by the standards of mine own people.” All RPGs based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' Barsoom stories can be discussed here.

John Connor of Mars. :P There's a crossover I would pay to see.
Well... actually, this could be reasonably an RPG game, so... you just need to find a Game Master, unless you want to run it yourself! :ugeek:

Why pay a license fee if you’re just going to make up a whole new character? They should have made “Dirk Baddassery, Reluctant Hero and Self-Pitying Jerk of Mars,” saved themselves the fee, and left the original property intact for someone who really wanted to make a John Carter movie.
Apt.

My biggest disappointments with the movie were the unnecessary changes to Carter, and the intertwining of multiple novels, when they could have largely just followed the blueprint in a Princess of Mars and had a killer movie. I wanted to see the atmosphere plant on the big screen

IF they conveyed the message with a decent promotion.... or at least a decent title!

According to Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Carter_(film)
Although the film grossed nearly $300 million worldwide, it lost a considerable amount of money due to its cost. At the time of its release Disney claimed the film's production budget was $250 million, although tax returns released in 2014 revealed its exact budget was $263.7 million after taking tax credits into account. Before the film opened analysts predicted the film would be a huge financial failure due to its exorbitant combined production and marketing costs of $350 million
So, after all the earnings were pretty good, despite the mentioned marketing issues, but the downside were the high production and marketing (!!!) costs combined, that caused the loss.

Consider that (according to this website http://mentalfloss.com/article/64952/20 ... s-all-time) the 20th highest grossing movie of all times (corrected for inflation) is at around $800 million: not so far away.

There's a great book "John Carter and the Gods of Hollywood" that does a deep dive into what went wrong.

Big piece of the puzzle is that Disney realized they were going to be getting Star Wars as filming was wrapping up - so they essentially lost all interest.

What a load of crock. I quite enjoyed most of the movie, if it would have gotten a little more love it would have been better. I wish it had been successful so that the property could be explored more on the big and small screen.

In some multibillion companies there is somebody loking even too carefully after each cents, in some other they lose interest on the hundreds of millions... what a strange world...

I know!

The good news is that ERB, Inc. got the rights back from Disney. Rumor is they're looking for a Netflix style, Game of Thrones treatment of the property.

I could easily see that being a smash success!

That would definitely be a much stronger format for the stories, especially seeing how they ended practically every chapter on a cliffhanger anyway.

Yeah, that would be great! If they can find a way to make green martians look good with a combination of CGI and practical effects instead of pure CGI (so you could have shots from certain angles without CGI at all), then that might help reduce the costs. CGI is getting cheaper anyway so that might not be an issue. I could see Netflix, Amazon and other streaming services being interested in a property like this.

My wife bought us a new TV. Bigger than the old one. First movie I watched … John Carter! Not as nifty as at the theater but still a load of fun.

Rented it and watched it at home after it had left theaters. Didn't recall having strong feelings about it one way or the other, and havent seen it since. But a friend has been telling me it was actually really good, and recommends me re-watching it. So just received a dvd copy from someone on ebay. Will let you know when I get around to watching again.
