No comments about the other John Carter of Mars movie? I remember the aliens looking more like I expected them to look in it.

aka "Princess of the Asylum"

The synopsis also sounds a bit closer to the novel than I expected, with many departures. I haven't seen it.

How about making a dedicated thread to this "other" movie?

Done. This is now a separate thread from the discussion about the Walt Disney John Carter movie.

I know The Asylum often makes low budget films with titles similar to that of big block busters, presumably to capitalize off the buzz from those bigger movies. However I had never heard of this one.

Is it worth checking out for fans of the John Carter universe?

Except that I'm pretty sure this one came out BEFORE Disney's John Carter, and maybe before JC was even announced, so they weren't really copying anything at that point.

My gut call is "no" but it's been a while since I've seen the film. The actor who played John Carter did a decent enough job, in my opinion. Tracy Lords doesn't seem anything like Dejah Thoris to me. :o I kind of like the flyers better than Disney's, however. Flyers should look more like boats and not feathery things.

I had to read up a bit on this. Disney's John Carter came out in 2012 while Asylum's film was released in 2009. However the Disney project appears to have been in the works since 2005, originally under Paramount, but actual production did not begin untill 2010. So it is possible that the original project could have inspired Asylum's decision, but that is just speculation on my part even if that is Asylum's typical M.O. :)

The Wikipedia article suggests the movie was released in 2009 as Princess of Mars and then rereleased in 2012 as John Carter of Mars.

I'm guessing The Asylum specifically rerelased the movie as John Carter of Mars to confuse people who are trying to buy or rent John Carter into choosing their movie by mistake.

Oh, go see it if just for the scene inspired by the Frazetta painting and then you'll know if you'll know how it stacks up against the Disney version. I think it had some things done better. It's been a while since I've seen either at this point.
