Are you playing or running a Barsoom game?

“As you know I am not of Barsoom; your ways are not my ways, and I can only act in the future as I have in the past, in accordance with the dictates of my conscience and guided by the standards of mine own people.” All RPGs based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' Barsoom stories can be discussed here.

Are you playing or running a Barsoom game?

Post by Yaztromo »

This topic is for sharing the games that we are playing or running: which ruleset are we using? which format? published adventures or home-brewed?
...or are we just reading ruleset and setting books, but not playing them?

I was running a 5E game in Blackmoor when I had my group transported to Barsoom for several gaming sessions before they found their way home. In irony, at the bottom of the Temple of the Frog they found some strange egg-like technology that took them back to Barsoom again, which is where we ended the campaign and (temporarily) retired the characters.

My group had the advantage (or disadvantage) that most of them hadn't read the books or seen the movie. I gave them temporary plusses for physical stats so that they could lift and jump better. They heard strange buzzing in the night that turned out to be flyers. They explored a ruined city (thanks to the Korad tiles from Mophidius) and fought green martians and white apes. I thought it was fun, but they seemed sort of glad to leave Barsoom, so I assume their enthusiasm for playing a John Carter game is not so strong. :(

My old high school crowd from the 80's would have eaten this stuff up.

I have been playing for a couple of years now on this play by post viewtopic.php?f=108&t=20598 run following this amateur setting book viewtopic.php?f=108&t=20780
I have to say I'm having fun and I like the GM's choice not only to use a low crunch ruleset adaptation, but also to highlight the role-play over the game mechanics. The adventures are mostly about walking around with no plan and without understanding a lot of what is happening in the background (until...) but I think that this can be overall appropriate for a starting party Barsoom.

Y'know, Yaztromo, I almost wish we could get together someplace using proper social distancing, lock ourselves into a small space until we could figure this 2d20 JC game out, and play a damned adventure using it. I have no idea why there are so few Barsoom fans out there, but we seem to be of like mind constantly!

What puzzles me is that a lot of people is buying the books (numbers are numbers...) but (at least in the places that I peruse) very few people wants to play.
I feel confused.

So why don't you join the above play by post? It's not last fashion 2d20 publication, although I would like to try it as well, but at least things are progressing...

I will have to consider it; I don't really play PBP games much.

Me neither, but when you do long-range relocations quite often it's not easy to find face to face groups playing the same thing that you'd like to play... so this is a practical surrogate of the preferred option.
