Modiphius offering John Carter RPG PDF for Free

“As you know I am not of Barsoom; your ways are not my ways, and I can only act in the future as I have in the past, in accordance with the dictates of my conscience and guided by the standards of mine own people.” All RPGs based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' Barsoom stories can be discussed here.

Modiphius offering John Carter RPG PDF for Free

Post by Havard »

Greetings!

I wanted to send you all an update on Modiphius during the lockdown and have something special for our community to say thanks for all your support. I've long been passionate about John Carter of Mars since I was a kid so if you head over to our webstore and use the code BARSOOM at checkout you can score yourself a free copy of the John Carter of Mars RPG core book in PDF before the end of April. It's a really streamlined version of our 2d20 system so if you like what you see the code VIRGINIA will get you 20% off anything in the John Carter RPG & miniatures collection.
I just got my copy. The only downside is that you have to register at their store if you havent done so already :)

This is the John Carter of Mars: Core Rulebook - PDF page.

Here is the rest of the John Carter product line, in case you want to get any of the other books or miniatures at 20% off.

Thanks!
You're welcome.

You seem to know more about John Carter than me. I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts on the free PDF.

(I assume that the discount on the minis would be useful for people using any ruleset.)

I think that the artwork is very nice and very adherent to the classic Barsoom iconography (mostly by Frank Frazetta). The setting description seems well done as well, including descriptions of the general culture at the time of Edga Rice Burroughs, that is very important to understand Barsoom and to decide how to present the world to your players (as some aspects are not so politically correct). The Talent system related to the setting in general looks good to me.
The game engine is 2d20, that is shared with various other Modiphiuos rulesets and reading through the core ruleset I tend to go a bit cross-eyed. However, this doesn't necessarily mean that the ruleset is too crunchy for me: I'd need to try it in practice before making my opinion.
Unfortunately, I couldn't find a GM willing to run an introductory adventure so far :(

Got it. Maybe this version will make me like the 2d20 system this time.

I doubt it. I've been following the discussion on DF where you have participated. I find the JC rulebook just as confusing to read as the STA one.

JC is the book where I put together the 6x6 skill grid chart -- it's sort of annoying that Mophidius didn't do this for us -- and I find that some of the spots on the grid have no examples that I can find in the rules. So it's clear that some stats have great value while others seem to be somewhat worthless.

And it has the same resource management stuff as the other 2d20 systems. The good news is that it's a "simplified" version of 2d20, which I hear happens EVERY TIME they make a new game. Someone on the Mophidius boards commented on that, noting that each new 2d20 game seemed to simplify the system compared to the previous game. (Maybe that means that Dune will be even more streamlined than John Carter?)

Of course, the freebie PDF didn't do me any good since I already own most of the rulebooks. It was nice of them to do, however.
