Living Greyhawk idea (overlay North America on Greyhawk map)

Post by James the Just » Thu Jul 19, 2018 5:29 pm

I've come up with an idea of how to overlay a map of North America over the World of Greyhawk by assuming that Greyhawk itself is Chicago and each hex 10 leagues, or 3/7ths of a degree latitude. With that a table of correspondences of places of the two can be made.

That is clever sir!
Nevond Nevnend (Montreal) actually fits the description rather well. We have the St-Lawrence river, Montreal has the Mount-Royal and the Laval suburban sprawl fits as the second city.

I picked Montreal as the successor city because it's the largest city nearby. The real Nevond Nevnend was probably to the north. Rouge-Matawin Wildlife Reserve would be a remnent of Phostwood. The Ottawa River is Zumker River, although, as we all know, rivers change their courses a lot over the millennia.

love it.

I have been looking to homebrew possibly or fit things to different maps and was just looking this week to fit something to a modern map or future plate map rather than late jurassic (like mystara) or some other era.

I find it very amusing that you made Ontario the Bandit Kingdoms <3 Yes, I'm a Westerner, lol. Not sure why Alberta is Tusmit, but I also don't know much about Tusmit. Ratik/Frost Barbarians seems like it should be the more northern areas like Yukon, NWT, Nunavut. I will acede that northern labrador does have a very Ratik feel though, so I guess..

I like the idea my grandfather visited Ratik when he was a Fisherman, one century ago.

Great. That's what it's for.
This way you can create modules with lots of detail just by looking at a real map.
In a way this is a bit like the Mystara map except for the time period. I've also worked out a chronology that places the World of Greyhawk in an alternate Prime Material plane that closely resembles North America in our time but happens to take place thousands of years ago, around the time of the adventures in The Lord of the Rings.

That's what I suspected. Maybe that's why things fit so well. However, I think he tried to conceal it a bit. I previously tried to do the same thing as done here but used the latitudes as given in the Guide. I t didn't work out very good.

Dragon Magazine Annual 2 p96.
That's what I suspected. Maybe that's why things fit so well. However, I think he tried to conceal it a bit.
In another source Gary explained that he reversed or inverted the North American map. Dyvers was Milwaukee and Minneapolis (Arneson's home) was Blackmoor. I wish I could recall the other source, because the internet warps the story with each retelling -- Wikipedia doesn't mention Gary's map reversal; some guy on reddit says Minneapolis is Dyvers. (same topic, five years ago https://tinyurl.com/ybswpnhb)

Then much was changed between the maps for the Lake Geneva campaign and TSR's published setting. A direct overlay of the published Flanaess and NA maps isn't any more enlightening or meaningful than comparing the Flanaess to Europe. It would be better to overlay the C&C Society Great Kingdom maps.

I think, on whole, this is a marvelously clever idea ... and while the geographical placement is a little different for reasons of logistics and whatnot, it's similar to what the Living Greyhawk campaign did.

Though, as mentioned upthread, Gygax made clear analogs to the real-world … but, this is the only one I think I'd offer a different suggestion for.
I think it would be Nyr Dyv/Lake Superior.

I'd love to make it Lake Superior for the obvious similarity in shape. However, there are a couple of drawbacks. For one, Nyr Dyv is 500+ miles in length while Lake Superior is about 350. Another is that it's in the wrong location if Greyhawk is Chicago.
Sometimes I wonder if Nyr Dyv wasn't modelled on Lake Geneva in Switzerland.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Gene ... tellit.jpg

Say, could you tell me how you got the pictures on your post? I've found the image button but don't know what to do next.

Making these analogs was quite difficult. It's like trying to solve a Rubik's Cube but without there being an exact solution; only the least incorrect one.

I'd be happy to!
The "IMG" tag place the code for the beginning and endingg of a line of code denoting that within it lies a link for an image.
Once you use the button (or hand-type the text for it), you just place the URL for your image of choice within the two bracketed IMG tags.
You can use a URL for your own image storage location, or from another website.

Thus, it should look something like:

Code: Select all

[img]your image URL goes here[/img]
Or, if you want it to be a thumbnail, and include a hyperlink to the full image so that it is clickable, it uses the URL tag you've already used, so:

Code: Select all

[url=your fullsized image URL here][img]your thumbnail image URL goes here[/img][/url]
The results for the second option might look something like this:
(My fan-art, using a compilation of Nyambe and Hepmonland)
Image

Protips:
  • Remember, most forums don't automatically resize images, so always try to re-size your images so they fit comfortably within the forum width. Typically 300 to 600 pixels.
  • If they're large, always try to use thumbnails, as I did in the example above.
  • Always credit your images, if you're using outside URLs of images that aren't your own, even if your source didn't.
  • Try to avoid long posts with bunches of images. They make quoting difficult, and others who comment my not trim your post, resulting in quote after quote of dozens of images.
Also, you can always use the "quote" function to see the code another Piazza member used to get an effect you want to duplicate.

Okay, I'll try it.

Well, when I put the above in (img)(/img) (I used parentheses here because it won't let me post otherwise) and previewed it I got this:

It was not possible to determine the dimensions of the image. Please verify that the URL you entered is correct.

For more information on the last image go here:

If you could do fan art on that...

The reason that you can't "determine the dimensions of the image" is usually that it's too large.
Either that, or the file storage site you're using doesn't allow direct links.
