Greyhawk Design Principles

Post by Greyhawk Grognard » Mon Sep 03, 2018 9:38 pm

New on the blog, I examine some of the key elements I feel make the Greyhawk setting (as originally published) so special.

Enjoy!

Thanks for posting this.

I've been trying to find a way to improve my Greyhawk-fu, so that I could make Greyspace material that has a bit of a Greyhawk vibe to it. I think this could help me.

Thanks! Glad you liked it.

Greyspace is an odd duck. While I love it because it adds to the general Greyhawk canon, it's distressingly... generic. It's very much a product of a homogenized attempt to create a supplement, rather than being the outcome of a living, breathing campaign, and it feels like it. Not that it's particularly bad. It's just... meh.

I'd love to see what you come up with, Greyspace-wise.

That's helpful. I still struggle to understand what makes some of the settings different from one another, and this article makes that clearer.

Many many years ago I wrote a post to the original Greytalk listserv along the lines of "What makes Greyhawk great". I'll have to see if I can dig it up.
