Age of Worms Actual Play!

Post by Into the Unknown » Fri Feb 15, 2019 1:55 pm

Heyo! My name is Charles, and I'm the Storyteller for Into the Unknown Podcast, an actual play fantasy/horror podcast. Right now, we're playing through the Age of Worms AP, originally published in Dungeon magazine. But there's a twist: we're using the 13th Age ruleset! Now, my question for you all is this: Icons (meaning movers and shakers of the setting) play a big part in 13A. I've already swapped one of 13A's Icons - the Lich King - to be Vecna. And I'm also going to replace the Archmage with one of the PCs from the last time I ran it, Merik. Can you think of any other NPCs, either canon or created, that could fit within these categories? Bonus points for ones tied very neatly to the AoW AP.

The Archmage

The Crusader

The Diabolist

The Dwarf King

The Elf Queen

The Emperor

The Great Gold Wyrm

The High Druid

The Lich King

The Orc Lord

The Priestess

The Prince of Shadows

The Three

I know nothing about 13A, but here are some possibilities to consider as Greyhawk-based replacements for these Tarot-like titles:

The Archmage - Mordenkainen, Vecna (you could make Kyuss the Lich King, or a death knight, or any number of other figures), Tzunk, etc.
The Crusader - a knight of the Shield Lands (perhaps
The Diabolist - Xaene perhaps, or some of the other figures from the 2e-era Great Kingdom
The Dwarf King - Cobb Darg? Others?
The Elf Queen - Yolande of Celene, or perhaps some other figure from the past?
The Emperor - lots of possibilities here, with the Overking being the most obvious
The Great Gold Wyrm - an ancient dragon, perhaps an enemy of Dragotha (there's a silver dragon in AoW isn't there?)
The High Druid - a Hierophant, perhaps?
The Lich King - Vecna (the obvious choice)
The Orc Lord - Turrosh Mak, perhaps Theg Narlot (although Slavers conflated the two figures)
The Priestess - lots of possibilities here, too
The Prince of Shadows - this could be a famous Thief (Kuroth) or a shade or a figure from the demi-plane of shadow
The Three - in mythology this usually refers to the three-part goddess of fate represented by a virgin, a mother, and a crone (The Norns, The Fates, the Furies, etc.); there's not really a straight-up GH equivalent, but you could easily create such a connection between some goddesses (Wee Jas, Ehlonna, Syrul), or some NPCs, etc.

Some other suggestions:

The Crusader: Robilar might work for this role.

The Diabolist: I think Iggwilv fits this role very well.

The Emperor: Ivid V, though that may put the Emperor in a more evil light than 13th Age presents (I'm not entirely sure on how 13th Age typically portrays this icon).

The Lich King: Vecna does seem the obvious choice here, but has the issue of possibly being a demigod (or even greater in stature). As an alternative, I would suggest Acererak.

The Prince of Shadows: This could be Jaran Krimeah, the Mage of the Vale, possibly.
