On this episode the gang explores Dragonlance’s history and the lows (or highs) of it’s conversion to the SAGA system. Cards are better than dice right…?

I've never really understood what the buy-in is for SAGA.

Is there a SAGA replacement for the PHB (and DMG and MM)?

Dragonlance Canticle #99: SAGA Rules!
Nice episode.

I had never heard of that Japanese Dragonlance Card game. That was interesting!

I think there are many reasons why Dragonlance SAGA failed, but I like that you pointed out that it was an award winning game. I do find it interesting that you pointed out the problems with the magic system. I do agree that the system had some problems, but this was really my favorite aspect of the game.

I think the real problems of Dragonlance SAGA were the following:
1) Dragons of Summer Flames and the Age of Mortals were controversial. Dragonlance SAGA was designed to play in this era of Krynn and it was difficult to play in the classic era with those rules.
2) No AD&D support for the Age of Mortals. Effectively it felt as if TSR were forcing DL fans to switch rulesets, although they back peddled with dual stat sourcebooks towards the end of the era.

I wish SAGA had simply been presented as an option for people looking at different ways to experience Dragonlance and that more attention had been given to running SAGA with other settings as well (such as was presented in some articles in Dragon).
