[5E] Mordenkeinen's Tome of Foes - Dragonlance Content?

Post by Havard » Mon May 21, 2018 10:31 pm

I heard some rumor that there is Dragonlance contents in Mordenkeinen's Tome of Foes, including a section on Dragonlance Dwarves?

I know there will be Spelljammer and Mystara creatures in the book, so I am curious to see what DL contents might be found there.

I heard that Kender was mentioned in the book.I began to imagine that Mordenkeinen caught a Kender, then throw him into various extreme environments such as Athas, see if it will lead to a series of chain effects to destroy the multiverse.

Readers get a brief rundown on the Dwarven history on Krynn, focused on Thorbardin, perhaps half a page, in all

It's no rumor. I saw a photo of a page posted on the social media.

There is a bit about the Dwarves of Dragonlance. It looks like it follows a similar section about the Dwarves of Forgotten Realms.

With Mordeneinen's Tome of Foes being about a number of large conflicts in the multiverse, I'm guessing that there is one chapter about dwarves fighting with some other race. I think they normally have dwarves up against giants.

I wonder if they will talk about a war between the long-gone dwarven empire of Kal-Thax and giants.

The question with the races included in Mordeneinen's Tome of Foes is: are they just there as an example race or are they the star/co-star of one of these multiverse conflict chapters? :)

Some of the worlds get passing, one-sentence mentions. Sometimes, as much as an entire paragraph! Sadly, the bulk of the material is Realms-centric, including words upon words about gawds and pantheons that generally don't apply to any of these other worlds....

... and not a single mention of Mystara :(

If Matthew Sernett was in charge of writing the Mystara section, perhaps we should not be so sorry that part was pulled?

There are mentions. Blurbs like "the descent of the drow is yet to happen in Krynn". And those small sections about gully dwarves and tinker gnomes, but that is all.

As RobJN said most of the book is Realms-focused. But, remember that Mordenkainen now lives in Waterdeep...

Yeah. Elminster rescued him from Ravenloft (after the events of curse of Strahd) and in the novel Death Masks Mordenkainen and Elminster were living together in Waterdeep, as El was helping Mordenkainen to recover from his experiences in the Domain of Dread.

For the record, Omin Dran (an npc from Nentir Vale) also lives in Waterdeep now. He appears in the same novel.

So, if seems now every important character from a given setting now lives in the Realms.

Individually these story elements are fine. But taken into the context of "we are taking everything from the other settings and brining it into the FR" is depressing. Not sure FR fans are thrilled either.

Yeah it's terrible. Add sections on such products to use them in different settings would cost very little effort, but would require a knowledge of past settings the current Wizards staff probably hasn't.

This needs to become a fantasy-based sitcom.

For the record, Omin Dran is Jerry "Tycho from Penny Arcade" Holkins' PC from Acquisitions Incorporated D&D event material.

For geekness, Omin became canon for Nentir Vale in the adventure "Storm Tower". And in their earlier podcasts, AcqInc first adventures took place in Nentir Vale, before they began to travel the planes. And now they are part of the Realms, just because.

I can understand why WotC is doing this, new players need a coherent background and the Realms is the setting that sells the most... But still I feel a bit uncomfortable with this as well

Their setting is "multiverse",so I guess the center of the multiverse is the Sword Coast.

My point is,although Mike Mearls said they plan to add more settings, but their behavior made me doubt that they actually have no plan.Even if there is nothing in the end, there will be a lot of 5E supporters want me to roll back to my grave.

I think that will be the epitath of 5E: They got the rules pretty much right, but failed with the setting(s).

Easy to be the setting that sells the most when it's the only setting they're selling at all. ;)
