Star*Drive

It's a great new fantasy role-playing game. We pretend we're workers and students in an industrialised and technological society.

Star*Drive

Post by Havard » Mon Jul 30, 2012 10:49 am

Has anyone used this Alternity/D20 Modern setting?
I just ordered the Star*Drive setting book. I probably won't be using the Alternity system, but I am thinking about stealing elements from the Star*Drive setting, perhaps even incorporating it in its entirity into my current Sci Fi campaign.

Alternity.net seems to be a wonderful resource. This Star*Drive/Star Frontiers Mash Up Campaign also caught my interest.

Which books are worth getting besides the main setting book?

Actually, Alternity is a nice system, though I definitely prefer Dark*Matter to Star*Drive.

For Star*Drive, you should be able to get the free "Warships" book, but it's only useful for Alternity (mostly starships stats/construction).

My favorite resources for the setting are the Alien Compendium, Arms & Equipment Guide, System Guide to Aegis & The Lighthouse There is a just a wealth of fluffy goodness in them.

And for a Star Frontiers/Star Drive kitbash Tangents has some great material in it too.

While there is a D20 Modern Dark Matter, the setting originated with the Alternity rules engine.

Of course, I was referring to the original Dark*Matter.

The issues you mention include sections called 'Ares'. Those should be available on Aternity.net as free (and legal) downloads.

Okay, so Star*Drive first appeared in 1998 as a setting for Alternity. It was also reused as an example setting in the D20 Future Supplement for D20 Modern and many of the races also appear in D20 Modern. The presence of the Fraal Race, suggests the possibility that this might be a future version of the world described in Dark*Matter. In addition to the Fraal, the setting includes 50 intelligent species including the following:
  • the Weren, brutish humanoids
  • Mechalus, a cybernetically enhanced race
  • T'sa, reptilian humanoids
  • Sesheyan, a race of gliders
  • Klicks, insect-like monstrous race.
What else is cool about this setting? :)

The fraal actually made it into Task Force Game's Starfleet Battles setting as a member race of the Federation. I'm guessing that means they may be a public domain race.

The fraal aren't in the d20 Modern SRD, but they are in the d20 Menace Manual. I think that must mean that WotC considers them Product Identity.

I can't find any evidence online that they're in the public domain under that name, though of course anyone can use the Greys.
