Talinie Map
I just started a website to dump 25 years of D&D stuff I've created - monsters, maps, etc. The site is: www.halfblogre.com. Here is a hex map of Talinie in the Mystara/Greyhawk style that I posted this week:

Cheers!

Re: Talinie Map
Thanks!
Nah. I did all of it on Photoshop. I've talked a few times with Thorf via email back when I posted some maps in 2008. And I'm constantly using his maps while I'm playing online with my guys. Great stuff.
As I post on my website in the new few weeks, I've got maps for Thurazor, Roesone, Ilien, Medoere, and Diemed just in Birthright.

Re: Talinie Map
Wow, truly beautiful!
I'm not so familiar with Birthright. Is Talinie an official Birthright setting or is it something that you came up with?
Also, I haven't had a chance to say it yet, but welcome to the Piazza! I hope we see more of this quality work!

Re: Talinie Map
Only just saw this. Great maps. I think I prefer the second one, but it is brilliant that you provided one hex and one non-hex.

Re: Talinie Map
I'm just finding this now. Very nice maps.
But what really caught my attention is some of the place names, specifically Stromness and Stronsay. Were these names in the official Birthright maps?

Re: Talinie Map
Those are local place names from the Orkney Islands, where I'm from and where I grew up. Stromness is a small town by the sea where you catch the ferry to the north of Scotland, while Stronsay is one of the northern isles, where my great grandfather lived.
It's very funny to see such familiar names on the map. I wish I had checked out Birthright now...

Re: Talinie Map
Whenever I made a map for a TSR book, I would pull place names from culturally appropriate maps in my big 1975 National Geographic Atlas. For instance, all the small towns on the Sind map in HWA3 Nightrage are actual Indian place names I read from the India map over the phone to Jon Pickens, who wanted to fill out the map. I don't recall which map I used as the source those Talinie names; I guess I must have been looking at the Orkneys.

Cool behind the scenes info Allen! Thanks for sharing!Allen Varney wrote:Whenever I made a map for a TSR book, I would pull place names from culturally appropriate maps in my big 1975 National Geographic Atlas. BTW, I forwarded the Mystara-relevant info in this quote to this thread: viewtopic.php?f=3&p=124074#p124074

Re: Talinie Map
Thanks for sharing the backstory. Many of the names on that map come from Scotland, and most of the rest would be at home in Scotland. I knew that you guys raided atlases for good names, but I never imagined you would choose names so familiar to me.Allen Varney wrote:Whenever I made a map for a TSR book, I would pull place names from culturally appropriate maps in my big 1975 National Geographic Atlas. Allen, regarding map design at TSR, was it a collaborative design with the cartographer? Did you just provide the names, and leave the terrain up to the artists, or did you have some more input into how things came out?

Re: Talinie Map
No, designers had to draw detailed maps -- at least I did -- which the in-house cartographers would then render, following the design precisely. The maps I drew for my three Birthright domain packs weren't particularly challenging, with one exception: Ariya, the big two-page center map of the whole giant city, with its three sections and many, many small buidlings. Editor Carrie Bebris told me, "Those mappers were dying, Allen!"Thorf wrote:regarding map design at TSR, was it a collaborative design with the cartographer? Cool maps! I loved Birthright. Wouldn't mind seeing a conversion for HackMaster.
