Hellsteel is the Whiteleaf equivalent of Baatorian Green Steel (described in the Arms and Equipment Guide). It is not distinctively colored...indeed, its insiduous nature comes in large part from the difficulty of detecting its use in weapon manufacture. Though as expensive as a +1 weapon and less easy to wield, a Hellsteel weapon retains its damage bonus even in an antimagic field, and is quite probably the deadliest manufactured object capable of doing so. The danger it poses is largely a result of its extradimensional properties; it sometimes seems to flicker when almost-unobserved, changing impossibly between multiple states.

On a simple dagger, the effects are subtle to the point of total invisibility, but this rare experiment in creating a full-sized polearm out of the rare and expensive metal demonstrates its strange properties quite well - glancing at the head of this trident-like polearm from the right angle makes it appear to be an impossible object, with the central blade emerging from between two tines but not actually being connected to them. While this is but an optical illusion and the fork's shape is solid enough, it produces just enough of a spatial warp around itself to increase the micro-structural trauma it inflicts on living tissue and on the atomic structures of matter; all Hellsteel weapons work this way, intentionally being misaligned from the fabric of the disorderly cosmos, with the intention of magnifying the vulnerabilities of "unruly" matter from "insufficiently obedient" planes.

Hellsteel is not mined anywhere in the Nine Hells, as various ignorant rumors often allege; it is a very intentional creation forged in the Hell of Wrath, through techniques as nearly psychiatric as metallurgic, and those who cut themselves on the deceptively dull-looking edges often find their psyches unbalanced in barely-perceptible ways, as the pain of these accidental wounds works its way deeper into themselves like a splinter of shrapnel.

(A normal ranseur would cost 20 GP and lack the +1 to damage. Its HP would be 20 and its Hardness only 5.)
