Maze Arcana have a weekly Eberron show on Twitch TV

Postby Big Mac » Sun Oct 02, 2016 7:50 pm

Maze Arcana are about 20 minutes away from launching their Dungeons & Dragons: Eberron show!

Here is the description from their webpage:
Maze Arcana wrote:Maze Arcana

The game is Dungeons and Dragons, the world is Eberron, and the show is Maze Arcana. A livestream webseries created by Satine Phoenix & Ruty Rutenberg.

Season 1: Sundays Oct 2 - Nov 20, 2016

12pm - 5pm PST

12pm PST is 20.00 BST, which is 36 minutes from now. (That means they will be finishing 01.00 BST, which is probably a bit late for me.)

Maze Arcana wrote:Travel into the world of Eberron
Take a seat at the table for an epic fantasy adventure as our players invite their celebrity friends to swash-buckle aboard Elemental Airships, unravel mystery on the Lightning Rail, and take you on one legendary ride through the Dungeons & Dragons setting of Eberron!

Here are the four main PCs in the game:
Maze Arcana wrote:Lucky was a cockpit navigator and mephit-mechanic of the 353rd fighter squadron Dreadnaughts, an elite group of small mephit-class escort airships, whose primary function was to conduct bombing raids over Karrnath. His squadron witnessed the Day of Mourning from the sky while still engaged in a dangerous dogfight at the edge of hostile airspace. Barely escaping the blast, their damaged ship was easy prey for the Karrnath Sky-Reaper Baron Nery Walteph. As the lone survivor of his unit, and perhaps the entire Cyre aerial forces, Lucky considers his survival a curse and his only redemption the act of bringing Baron Nery Walteph to bear for his fallen friend.

Rav Elefrat - A changeling through and through, Rav has made his living slipping from one life to the next and even impersonated an officer or two. Running from his past, he was able to book passage as the armed guard for a small caravan train. When bandits attacked, he single handedly drove-off the aggressors but the wagon master did not escape unscathed and died only days later at an inn in the small Breland village of Shavalant, with only the guard that failed to save his life at his bedside. While Rav regrets he was not able to save the man, the opportunist in him saw another door open. Alone in every crowd, he had never felt love until inhabiting the life of a wagon master, Rav Elefrat.

Once a rich girl who found salvation from the hypocrisies of nobility within the church, Tabbris gave up her name and inheritance to pledge herself to the ministry of the Silver Flame. The first of her year to exhibit a poignant spiritual connection with the flame drew the notice of the Order of Templar. With her powers growing daily, her calling seemed set, until she was tasked to apprehend a young Kalashtar girl for trial. Her life forever changed the day she found the girl and her companions cornered by feral werewolves. Committed to returning the girl, and dispatching the churches sword enemy, the lycanthrope, Tabbris entered the fray and turned the tide of the fight. In the melee she was bit and her blood now sullied. With quick action the process was slowed, and a she now shares the similar traits of a Shifter. In fact, most people might never know any different, but the Templars most certainly would and no amount of service would spare her. Until she finds a cure, or the curse wins out, Tabbris must wander a new path alongside those with as much interest in avoiding the judgement of the Silver Flame as she.

A poor street urchin, Azure scavenged a meager living on the seedy streets of Sharn, a city built miles into the sky by powerful magic wards, where only the wealthiest are able to afford the luxury of sunlight. Her psionic powers manifest as she was chased down by some small time thugs, deflecting a knife thrown directly at her. While the event certainly frightened off the local riff-raff, it also caught the attention of a powerful cardinal of the Silver Flame when the wayward knife left him with a large gash across his face. Azure knew that the most powerful church in Eberron wouldn’t think twice about convicting a beggar for assault, she fled the city.
Finding the companionship of Lucky and Rav made her feel safe, at least until the assassins arrived. With their help and a lot of practice, she is learning just how helpful her new abilities can be.

Thanks for signing up Ruty!

It's great to have you over here.

I've missed a few of your shows. I believe you were putting them up on YouTube. I need to find the episodes and stick links to them all in the top post, so that I can catch up.

Good eye Dragon Turtle!

Zak (Sabbath) Smith was the DM for that series and Satine Phoenix was one of his players. Up until this point, our game has had the guest of the week to help us introduce different aspects of Eberron and how the setting differs in many ways from the traditional Forgotten Realms that WotC focuses its efforts in. After this Sunday's show with Taliesin Jaffe reprising his role of Bandore Mercury, the Discord Bard, we'll take Thanksgiving off and come back with the core campaign elements, weaving the celebrity guests into multi-episode arcs where it fits best. So you'll get plenty of time to get to know Zak & Satine, and hear about what they've been up to since iHiWMA, as well as meet Milynn Sarely (cosplay model and gamer chick) and Kyle Vogt (aka Peter from The Room).

Additionally, people like Keith Baker and other game designers will be by from time to time as well as a good number of the WotC staff (they LOVE Eberron...which I think is good for Eberron fans to know). The channel will start to build out some additional content, prop building, card games, table top, etc., as the viewership grows and we can afford to. That's the plan anyway!

I'm guessing you have some affiliation to Harvard, the school, so you'll be pleased to know this week's guest was, Dinora Walcott, an alum doing quite well for herself here in Hollywood.

A couple papercuts are nothing compared to a 10,000-foot drop. Just ask Rav! When he's not surrounded by a dozen or so undead. Good thing Mezael (Kym Jackson) and Gar-Katu (Jonathan Keltz) have been dispatched to bring him home... not that he has one anymore on account of the raiding and all BUT-- Things get interesting when Rav recognizes a doll his saviors recoved from a previous air-ship-wreck. With Tabbris on a special mission to the north, Azure & Lucky are thrilled their friend is alive. Well, "friend" is loosely-used. "Alive" too, for that matter.

The 2nd series certainly sounds like it is going to be an interesting change in format. The multiple-episode thing is sort of like the old format for Doctor Who.

The discussion that you and Satine had about Maze Arcana on Dragon Talk had some interesting comments about season 2. If the new Black Magic cameras are smaller, I guess that you could change the gaming table a bit and make it easier for you all to work around it. :)

I saw that the Maze Arcana Paetron campaign was $146 of $250 towards your second goal of building Eberron specific terrain. I guess you could turn that into a separate YouTube video (maybe filmed after the end of each main show) so that you could paint and glue stuff and give it a week to dry for use in the next adventure.

There are some great dungeon creation videos from DMGinfo and some great (mostly compatible) videos from DM Scott (theDMsCraft). They use something called the 2.5D system (which has the name because it is supposed to be between 2d tiles and 3D terrain).

I don't know if you are planning to go down the 2.5D route, yourselves, but the advantage is supposed to be the suggestion of height without things actually having walls around them. That might have some advantages if you are trying to film the terrain at an angle (which is what you have done in the last couple of episodes) and can't really afford to have high walls blocking the line of sight. (That's also supposed to be the advantage for regular gamers - being able to see stuff inside a maze of tunnels without needing to stand up and lean over the gaming table.)

Another thing you might want to consider (and you don't need to use one technique all the time) is that you have an awesome artist on your team (is it Satine?) and they could maybe knock up some cool pictures of walls, floors or other things that Paetron backers could print out on sticky labels (or use in an online game).

There are a few commercial people out there that make terrain (like Dwarven Forge) and you might be able to get some of them to sponsor an episode and give you a bunch of their terrain to paint and demonstrate. That's not quite the same thing as building your own, but if you did some episode's some way and other episodes another way, you could then compare the effect of 2D terrain, 2.5D terrain and 3D terrain and tell people the cost of doing each thing (and also tell them how much space each type of terrain will burn up in their house ;) ). Perhaps you could use a different technique every season or something like that, so that you can maintain continuity.

Having said that, I think that your "unique selling point" is that you are doing an Eberron based story. :)

Keith Baker puts a lot of effort into supporting Eberron (even though he isn't getting paid to support it right now). He has a ton of articles on the archived 3e section on the WotC website and puts quite a few up on his own website now (in between making new games). Perhaps you could get him to write something that ties into your story at some point. There is a lot already written for Eberron, but it also has some some underrated elements. If you can pull in funding, maybe you could get Keith to build something that has not been created before, use it as a plot element in a future series and then have it go to your Paetron backers and/or get sold on DMs Guild (when WotC finally puts Eberron onto DMs Guild). (In fact, when DMs Guild goes live with Eberron, you might be able to repackage your tabletop plots into a Maze Arcana Adventure Path.)

I'll be very interested to see where you go with this over the next few seasons.

Havard is his name. He comes from Norway and it's a Scandinavian name. I used to call him "Harvard" (with an added in "r") but then somebody pointed out I was spelling his name wrong. (I must have known Havard for well over a year, both on the Wizards COMmunity boards and here on The Piaza before I got his name right. )

And Dragon Turtle is his forum rank. (In Havard's case it is a custom forum rank that he won from the owner of The Piazza. Most people on The Piazza have a forum rank based on how many posts they have made.) You have already levelled up twice. You started out as a Peasant and then became a Kobold before turning into a Goblin. If you keep on posting you will soon change into another D&D monster. :)

Ashtagon (the owner of The Piazza) usually gives away some custom forum ranks on the "birthday" of The Piazza, so maybe you could snag your favourite Eberron creature/monster as a custom forum rank one day.

Here are the YouTube videos for Maze Arcana Episode 8: The Shadow Knows.

Bandore Mercury (Taliesin Jaffe) returns to where it all began! Our misfits rush back from the (spoiler) to find Bandore engaged in a drinking contest and now estranged from the (spoiler) he picked up in Episode 1. Baron Nery Waltroph offers his services, and Lucky is beside himself with all the rage a warforged can contain. A Void Dragon and a mage named Omodort show our heroes just what the Realm of Eternal Night looks like through a portal to Mabar. Curious? That usually kills the cat -- and we usually have at least one of those in the party...

Watch us live Every Sunday from 12pm - 4pm PST on twitch.tv/mazearcana as Game Master Ruty takes Satine Phoenix, Milynn Sarley, Kyle Vogt, Zak Smith & our special guest through a world of elemental airships, lightning rails, and the most sophisticated sentient beings. It's the stuff movies dare to replicate but only found in Dungeons & Dragons and only live in Eberron!

Great minds!

Re: New Format - We're looking at Jan to "officially" start Season 2. In a discussion we had over the break, we decided it was better to enjoy the holidays and give everyone a glance at where our group plays when not at the studio. A little behind-the-behind-the-scenes action. There is a good chance we'll have a LOT overhauled by some new advancements. The other side to it too is dependent on a couple pieces, for instance, the Black Magic is only an option if we can get a couple things in place backend-wise first. I have some lenses I can borrow til mid-January. Without those, the cameras don't do us much good. We're working on putting together an Amazon Wishlist & Affiliate program to give people some options outside of the patreon for supporting us, even if they don't have spare change laying about.

Re: Terrain build out, et al - Exactly! We're hoping to turn that into another show. The money on the patreon isn't for the terrain materials. It goes to pay for other incidentals that are required in the peripheral each time we add additional content.

Re: Terrain filming - Yup! With our new set up, the desire is to add another monitor that sends the feed of the map/minis to the players so they can have a better view. At that point we won't need to worry about line of sigh from the players to the minis. I like the idea of Satine making some more art to print out, and maybe that's something we can add down the line, right now she is putting a lot of effort into other areas and we're hoping to have new art for all the core characters, as well as npcs, and locations.

Re: Keith - SHHHHHHHH! Secrect Squirrel keeps secrets.

Re: Havard - Good catch! I'll make a note.

Re: I guessed the Dragon Turtle title but the backstory is interesting for sure! What's the "birthday" of the forum?

All good notes. Anyone else have any?

RutyWoot wrote:Additionally, people like Keith Baker and other game designers will be by from time to time as well as a good number of the WotC staff (they LOVE Eberron...which I think is good for Eberron fans to know). The channel will start to build out some additional content, prop building, card games, table top, etc., as the viewership grows and we can afford to. That's the plan anyway!

RutyWoot wrote:I'm guessing you have some affiliation to Harvard, the school, so you'll be pleased to know this week's guest was, Dinora Walcott, an alum doing quite well for herself here in Hollywood.

It was great to see you over there (in the chat). It's a shame that Norway is so far East that you can't do the whole show.

I hope you enjoyed it. The old shows are all online if you ever want to catch up on one.

I know that Eberron is not your area of expertise. What would you think of something like this being done for Blackmoor or Mystara?

Just to update --

Season 2 has started off right where we left off.

Those videos will be up as we are able to work through them. At present, we are in the middle of convention season so that sort of thing is challenging when you can't have your main rigs working on processing and the majority of your manpower is on the road. Still, we are working on it!

I'm pretty much caught up now and am catching the streams live.

Straight off the bat, I've not got experience with Eberron, I'm coming into this as someone who devours these videos, and when I say devours I mean that I caught up on Critical Role in only a slightly longer time than it took to play them end to end, I inhale them.

So straight away, it's a "hello, this is different" when I saw Warforged and Shifters and the like, and I was intrigued by the backstories that are talking about things that I don't know about but can kinda figure out, and as I watched the world became clearer to me, and I really enjoy the "show don't tell" nature of story-telling, but the addition of the graphics in the S2 intro really made the world more solid to me. Is there an "introduction to Eberron" video out there? If not that could be a useful place to "jump off" from into the ongoing series.

I have some small, and I do mean small, experience of TV production (like a fortnight, tops, in the days of video) and I find the technical side of these shows fascinating, the difficulty in live editing a show like this seems to me to be comparable with producing a live news program or sports event (albeit at a different pace) so the split screen setup makes a lot of sense to me. TBH I think the setup works better than similar shows (better than Critical Role, but I get they have a larger cast). Like a sports show, the camera needs to be pointed at where the action is, in this case either the board or the cast, but I can't help thinking, that in D&D the RL action is the dice, and no live stream that I can think of shows the results of the dice, in fact, I think even the pre-recorded shows (which I also devour) generally use a graphic to represent a dice roll which is odd, considering how much as a group we gamers tend to fetishize our dice, I feel that a dice cam would really enhance accessibility.

To again draw a parallel with sports shows (which I do not devour) the commentators assume a certain familiarity with the game as they commentate but the uninitiated begin to get an idea of what's going on by observing the stats (Yes, I really am that guy who says, "Oh so because they did that thing with the ball they get points"). Having watched the show with a new player, they really showed me how much familiarity I brought to it, but the screen might get cluttered if player stats were on display, and HP updates seem like a technical stretch, but with colour coded dice thrown in a communal dice tray, the newbie gets something "real" to relate to the narrative (Even as I type I can hear my players revolting "colour coded dice! I'll throw my own dice" and "don't tell me where to throw my dice, this patch of table is lucky").

I think the guest players have been brilliant, and also the way the guest players have been handled/worked in works really well (again better than other shows, Vox Machina have been known to rob guests, and the waffle crew tends to kill them  ) It feels more stable and planned than simply "such and such is in town", and the campaign's structure seems designed to accommodate them comfortably, which as a DM who has tried with varying levels of success using guest players, impresses me.

I've said it before but I feel like I'm watching the evolution of a new type of TV show (if the concept of TV shows isn't an anachronism yet) and Maze Arcana in particular seems to be evolving faster than most, it's exciting to see it happen

Satine Phoenix & Ruty Rutenberg from Maze Arcana are two of the first ten people chosen to join the Guild Adept program at DMs Guild! :o

I wonder if that means they can create material compatible with their shows for DMs Guild.

Eberron isn't up there, but Maze Arcana is also doing a show based in Forgotten Realms now.
