5th D&D Asian Adventures

Hi I was wondering when D&D 5th is going to have Asian Adventures?, 2nd D&D had wonderful Asian Character classes.

I think the 5E logic would be to make new class paths rather than making entirely new classes ;)

The Path of Shadow monk is pretty obviously a ninja, and you can make any Fighter into a Samurai just by having him wield a longsword two-handed and not use a shield. (You might want to design something lighter than full plate that can serve as samurai armor, but you could probably just use scale or something and say the difference is purely cosmetic.) The DMG section on turning the game into Wushu offers various Asiatic names for the PHB weapons, and another part of the book has a picture of a Samurai next to a suggestion to make Honor a seventh Ability score.

Well I know that L5R RPG isn't going to part of D&D 5th, I would like to make an official D&D setting based on Ancient China until the Middle Age in Chinese History.

Adventures in Kara Tur on DMs Guild. I've used Kara Tur in games (mostly Kozakura with a bit of Shou Lung) since shortly after 1e Oriental Adventures came out. Since Kara Tur is still a canon part of Toril, that is what I'd likely use.

Kara Tur is part of the Realms officially so I would have to create a Wuxa Fantasy Asian world,

The "Unearthed Arcana" column on the Wizards site presented a 5E Samurai fighter archetype last month.

I highly recommend picking up Heroes of the Orient. It's a great book.

I really didn't care for it. I just didn't get the vibe that this subclass was even remotely samurai-like. I was really considering writing my own and packing it with flavor, but then I saw how Heroes of the Orient did it and realized they beat me to the punch.

Mists of Akuma might be up your alley. It's all built to be noir and steampunk (think Afro Samurai + Ravenloft) but we tried to make it so if you just wanted to do eastern fantasy/wuxia, it isn't hard to pull out the technology bits. There's free PDFs you can check out here -- we went a different route with paladin samurai and wu-jen warlocks, and should you not want to have firearms or kite-planes, turn the clock back 160 years and run the game before (or as!) Soburin gets invaded by the technologically advanced Ceramians and you're good to go. :)

Some kind of priest (presumably shinto) and samurai for Japan, monks in China? Otherwise most of the standard classes (your typical fighters/wizards/etc.) just need reskinned and tweaked. It really would depend how far into the rabbit hole you're trying to go--ninja might be worth turning into a class all of its own if the PCs are all going to be shinobi :)

Taking a look at 3E's Oriental Adventures has the following:

Samurai
Shaman
Shugenja (Divine Spellcasters)
Sohei (Warrior Monks with Divine Spells)
Wu Jen (Arcane Spellcasters)

Taking a look at my list of 5E Classes, we have the following:


Samurai | Unearthed Arcana Shaman | N/A Shugenja | N/A Sohei | Similar to Kensei from Unearthed Arcana? Wu Jen | Unearthed Arcana Mystic Subclass (Psionic Based)

Do we have anything similar to the classes that seem to be missing? Perhaps I have overlooked something?

Sohei is basically a Barbarian, except Lawful. Rather than flying into a rage, they focus intensely on "martial energy" or some similar variety of Oriental new-age woo. With 5E abandoning Alignment restrictions, you pretty much just have to rewrite the fluff (allow wearing of armor, drop access to the Beast Spirit subclass, etc), and Barbarian will work reasonably well for Sohei. You might import a few Paladin class features and the idea of an oath, since Sohei are also Paladin-esque (though not necessarily Good).

Ahh, thanks!

I suppose something like that could be engineered in 5E if the campaign needs them.

I also notice that Kensei exists as a PrC in 3E.

I suppose it might be worth going through the entire list of PrCs from Oriental Adventures (d20) and seeing if there are more 5E equivalents?

The latest issue of RPG Review is an Asia special with lots of good stuff. There is even some conversions to D&D 5e including a Hengeyokai race I helped out with. This could be used in a Chinese setting to create characters like Madam Whitesnake.
