Thanks TAD.

I've not added this yet. This sticky needs a major overhaul.

Concerning Geocities sites, some (but not, I'm afraid all) can be found on either Reocities (same URL, but replace "geocities" with "reocities") and Oocities (similarly).

Thanks Charles. We got word through to Static and (although he was really busy) he managed to grab a few Geocities websites to save on Beyond the Moon's Lost Spheres section. The Wayback Machine might also have copies of some of them.

In my eternal quest to track down the long-lost spelljammer websites of old, I found a couple of new ones:
http://www.asterland.com/ home of Silkspace

http://toy-soldier-spelljammer.webs.com/ home of Dragonspace (another one) and a fairly complete write-up of Scrospace (aka Dukagshspace on my map).

and when did I become a troll? (only just noticed)

Here's the location of my random crystal sphere generator:
http://www.peterstribe.com/mag/SJ/cryst ... ator2.html

Some of the features are: generates system name, Primary, origin of stars, wildspace conditions and spelljammer activity. It also generates planets, their names, size, satellites, conditions, orbital tracks, and notable groundlings.

Much thanks to nerik for his excellent feedback and suggestions on ways to improve this generator.

Hey Mag,

This is a very cool app! I'm going to have to play around with it a bit more, but so far I like what I see.

And welcome to the Piazza!

Ok, some feedback already ;) Keep in mind most of this is personal preference:

1) You're generating an orbital track, but not the distance/travel time from the primary. I think adding this number could be very helpful to a DM for determining travel times to each of the planets in the system. Otherwise the DM has to create these numbers on their own.

2) ...and this is minor... The Fire and Earth colors look fairly similar. I'd make the fire color more orange than red.

3) It might be neat to include the orbital motion (clockwise, or counter-clockwise) as part of the planet description. That way you can end up with some planets that orbit different from the majority. I'd actually do this by setting a default rotation, and then maybe coding a small chance that each planet does the opposite. Anyway, that's just one idea. This might be able to fit on the orbital track line and look something like this:

Outer orbital track: #9, clockwise

4) Again, just personal preference on this one, but not every planet that is generated gets each attribute. For example some don't have a Moons section, or a Characteristics section, or Notable Groundlings. My preference would be to show all sections and put a "None" label where those things are absent. That will just give the planet descriptions a more uniform feeling - of course it will also make the output larger... but I would be ok with that.

Thanks for the feedback, Chimpman, these are all great comments! I'll address these individually:

1) Excellent idea -- I've implemented this and added it to the site. Hopefully I calculated it right...

2) I've changed fire to orange...let me know if that works. I'm colorblind, so it all pretty much looks the same to me.

3) Orbit is under the System Type if they're all in the same direction, otherwise the spin shows next to the planet. If that's confusing I can always show it next to the planet

4) I'll see how that looks. I was initially trying to cut down on the output because it can get pretty long if you've got 18 planets with 10 satellites each, but standardizing the format might make it cleaner. For the Notable Groundlings, I didn't want to put "None" implying that a planet is unoccupied -- I was just going for a quick reference to spark ideas or help tailor encounters around the NPC's that are the most common (or interesting or likely to interact with PC's in exciting ways). Now that you bring it up, it does seem to make more sense to list groundlings for every planet or explicitly state that it's a dead world.

Thanks for the comments!

I still have to generate more samples, but I am seeing some trends for very large numbers - at least for the outer planets. This is not necessarily a bad thing... however if you take into consideration that the sphere wall is (typically) twice the distance from the primary as the farthest orbiting planet, we can end up with spheres that are so big a ship will run out of air before reaching the first planet.
Maglubiyet wrote:2) I've changed fire to orange...let me know if that works. I'm colorblind, so it all pretty much looks the same to me.
This looks much better (at least to me)! It's now much easier to distinguish fire bodies just by color.

Ahh... ok, let me play around with this some more to see if I can find what you're talking about.

Yeah, some of the travel times are several months when there are over a dozen planets. I'm using the formula from the Concordance for placing planets and calculating each orbit in the outer track as 400 million miles. If my calculations are off or there's a better system let me know.

I've updated the Notable Groundlings to be included for every world, so if it's dead it'll explicitly state it. I've also added a different set of groundlings for fire bodies.

Thanks for the feedback!

There was one mentioned on SJML - The Arcane Space Division. Something you may want to add to Lost Spheres?

Hey Nerik, I am moving my Toy Soldier Saga site tohttp://toysoldiersaga.wordpress.com. I've added a new planet to Dukagshspace; you'll find it on the "Chart Room" page in one of the drop-down menus. I'm going to be doing a lot of work with my created spheres this coming month on Wildspace because it's Planetology & Crystal Spheres month! And if anyone has something to offer for it, I'd love to have it! Thanks!

While looking for the spelljammer fanzine I found Spelljammer: Birthstone. I didn't see it mentioned anywhere. It's hasn't been updated in a long time. I haven't looked through it.
