Mapping Checklists

Postby Thorf » Sun May 13, 2012 1:41 pm

This post will only be interesting or useful to other cartographers.

Now that CS6 is here, I'm faced with the task of upgrading all my maps to the latest format. That in itself is very easy, but at the same time I want to upgrade them to my latest mapping version too. And I've made so many changes and tweaks to the system over the years that frankly it's hard to keep track of how up to date each map is.

So, I've decided to add check lists to the Wiki page for each map, detailing in a simple manner what stage each map is at. It's not a big deal checking each map against the list and putting in ticks and crosses.

To that effect, I've put together two lists: one for replica maps, the other for updated maps. Before I start using them, I need to make sure they're complete. So please have a look and tell me if there's anything you think I should be adding in here.

Replica Maps
  • Castle border - version 3
  • Coasts - accurately traced with pencil at 0.5 fidelity
  • Fonts - converted to Feinen and Feinen Bold/Garamond Premier Pro Medium Caption/ITC Korinna
  • Labels - positioned in exact same position as on original map
  • Legend - included on map if present on original map
  • Mistakes - duplicated from original map and noted in map notes
  • Palette - checked and updated to revised version 2
  • Palette - adapted to match original map colours
  • Plateaus - style matched to original map
  • Rivers - accurately traced with pencil at 2.5 fidelity
  • Rivers - redone using variable stroke width
  • Roads - art matched to original map
  • Title - converted to ITC Quorum
  • Trails - accurately traced with pencil and/or pen
  • Trails - art matched to original map

Updated Maps
  • Castle border - version 3
  • Coasts - combined and adapted from high resolution replica coasts
  • Fonts - converted to Feinen and Feinen Bold
  • Labels - assigned to paragraph styles conforming to mapping conventions
  • Labels - positions adjusted for legibility and clarity
  • Palette - checked and updated to revised version 2
  • Plateaus - smoothed out and integrated with surrounding hexes
  • Rivers - combined and adapted from high resolution replica rivers
  • Rivers - redone using variable stroke width
  • Roads - opacity 60%, 2.5 point black
  • Title - converted to ITC Quorum
  • Trails - opacity 60%, 1.5 point black, 2.5 spaced 0 point dashed lines

Edit: Incidentally, I haven't mentioned hex art here, because there are so many different versions that I'd need to make a whole new list just for hex art. I guess I could just add a single line for hex art with a date to show when it was last updated.

Another thing I forgot to mention is that I intend to add the modification date after the tick.

Here's an example of how this will work. I've updated the Iciria updated map in various ways, and the check list now reflects the current state of the map. On the technical side, I changed the text of the list into templates, so it is easier to keep the list the same for all maps.

One of the nice things about this is the use of templates allows us to go to a template and see what files/pages link to it. This means that it is relatively easy to get lists of what maps are in what state. I may change the templates further by incorporating the ticks and crosses into the actual templates (currently they are separate), because that would make these lists all the more useful.
