Mapping around Corunglain (Darokin, 2 2/3 miles per hex

Notes on the locations, etc. will be in the next post.

Todo:
  • Adjust waterways as needed
  • Develop geography
  • Name the hill ranges
  • Finalize names/backgrounds of new sites
  • Incorporate fanon & ensure consistency with fanon history
  • Adventure seeds
  • Add some NPC detail

Thanks, as always, to isomage for hexgimp, Thorf for the art (and Darokin map to work from), and the various denizens of The Piazza for pointers, help, suggestions, and previous development (Chimpman, Gecko, Hugin, Cthulhudrew, Ashtagon, and anyone else I may have missed). Very special mention to Geoff (Seer of Yhog), since this will pull heavily from his campaign development.

Locations:
(Anything not described below is from the Gazetteers. Anything not sourced was created for this map.)

Villages:
Beneza: Village.

Ergythia: elf-friendly border village (Note: like "Ar-delphi-a", taken from Classical Greek city -- Gythium)

Keeps and Towers:
Elfwatch: A small keep dating from the Elfwar, it is now more a ceremonial and diplomatic center than an actual fort.

Garron Keep: Small stopping point between Ft. Runnels and Corunglain, mostly for supplies. Named (like most keeps) for a heroic general.


Lairs and Ruins:
Delmar: Ruins dating from [xxx]

Monument of Friendship: Ruins from before the Elfwar, once a marker of the friendship between Alfheim and Darokin. It has since been turned into a memorial of national friendship fallen and renewed.

Other Areas of Interest:

Inhabitants:

(Humanoids along the border w/Broken Lands, and in hills to west (see Ardelphia region))

Adventure Seeds:


Closing notes:
This area should be loaded with history, being a central breadbasket region and a border with the humanoids to the north. The hills are probably dotted with additional long-forgotten ruins.

Preparations continue, but I will be running Castle Caldwell this Friday, and will be placing the castle itself in the ruins closest to Corunglain (to the northeast). There could be some in-game logic to this, given that I've created the village of Caldenhill, which lies on Calden Stream. "Calden" could have been a common local surname, or the name of a prominent local lord in some bygone era. "Caldwell" could be a contraction of an older form - "Caldenwell", "Caldenwheol", or something like that.

"Caldwell" = "Cold Well?"

Maybe there's a natural reservoir or something close by?

Calden Stream originates in the hills, so it could very well be a natural spring. Many locals could have derived surnames from that - Caldwell, Caldfield, Calden, etc. That would be less work than having the name derive from some heroic figure - although there could still be one anyway.

Quick map note - I was thinking it might create some local flavour if the tributary that joins the Streel near Darilon is called the Lesser Streel (Calden Stream is a tributary to that). The locals don't think this is odd at all, and they have forgotten why it was named that (it occasionally bursts its banks in spring, like the Streel does). Outsiders get confused, which provides for some amusing misdirection.

Lesser Streel? What about Little (Li'l?) Streel?

I could just see some local wag naming their daughter Lily Streel (if Streel is a family name)...

Also, I updated the Corunglain regional map to include the 1000 AC era Daelbar work. Note that Harnelsfall is one hex off the side, so I may expand the map a couple hexes to the west to keep it in this one.

Maybe the spring is unnaturally cold year round? Perhaps it originates in an ice cave, or something? (Like at Sunset Crater in Flagstaff.)

Given indoeuropean is the language base of the Mystaran Setting Naming Convention

Streel is Strebh-El (which means To Wind, Turn - To Go) you get the impression that a River named the Streel Winds across the Streel Plain.

Caldwell is infact Kal-dwei-el (Meaning Cup/drink - To Fear - To Go) referring to a drink to strengthen one's resolve to depart. Last Drinks. (Referring to merchant Caldwell as Tavern Keeper perhaps?).
