Introduction & New Thread Posting Instructions

Postby Thorf » Thu May 29, 2008 2:18 pm

This forum is for discussing geographical maps of Mystara, whether they are hex maps, grid maps, or just plain maps.

Each thread will cover one map of a specific area at a given scale, and all discussions about that map thereafter should go into that thread. In this way, we will end up with a reference site for Mystaran cartography, with all the pertinent data and sources for each map archived for future reference - as well as hopefully a selection of maps different people have made for the same area.

Thread titles should be in the following format: [Outer/Hollow World] Area name/map name, (scale. For example, "[Outer World] Karameikos, 8 miles per hex", or "[Outer World] City of the Stars Cavern, 2 miles per hex", etc. If the map doesn't have a scale, you can leave it out. (I will help with renaming threads, so don't worry too much about this.)

You don't necessarily have to have a map to start a thread - you can start a thread in order to work on a certain map - but the goal for every thread is to eventually produce a map (or selection of maps) of that thread's subject, and to post it in the first post of the thread. If you're still not sure how to format things, please PM me and I'll start a thread for whatever map you want.

Feel free to post comments, corrections, etc. in any existing threads - your help will be very much appreciated! I intend to keep updating the first post in each thread with the most up to date maps, as well as notes, comments, and other info. When I make a major update, I will post a notice to that thread at the same time.

Map Template

Here's a useful template to use for the first post in each thread:

Now I'll explain what goes in each section.

First, remember that each thread deals with just one specific area at a certain scale.

Maps
All the maps produced so far, including: whether they are replicas or updated maps; map title; in the case of a replica, the source; the scale; and the cartographer.

Maps should be listed under bullet points, with a thumbnail, then linked icons for each file type the map is available in. (This should be either PNG, PDF, JPEG, or sometimes GIF. PNGs are generally best for maps with areas of solid colour, while JPEG is best for maps with lots of textures and shading.) Feel free to link to the icons on my site - I'll provide the code for each at the bottom of this post.

Comments
Comments about the maps, briefly outlining any interesting points and problems.

Sources: XXX, XXX.
A complete list of all the sources relevant to the area in question at the specified scale. Note that maps of other scales do sometimes provide useful details.

Notes on XXX
Bullet point notes from each source detailing inconsistencies and changes made to the maps. This section primarily concerns the differences between Replica and Updated maps, explaining and justifying changes made.

To Do List
Bullet point list of what tasks need to be done to bring this map to completion.

Finally, the code for these icons: Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image

Re: New Thread Posting Instructions (please read before posting)

Update: I changed the posting format for the maps, and added some more images to make the presentation clearer. You can see the results on any of the map pages.

The only one that is probably not immediately obvious is the "First Era" button. This refers to the first era of hex art, as you can see on the hexes featured on that button. I mentioned it briefly once before on the old MMB, but I am splitting the maps roughly into three major eras. I'll expand upon this at some point soon when I begin the thread for Appendix C: History of Mystara's Maps.

Has anyone got any other ideas for streamlining these posts? Any more buttons I should add? I'm already considering making buttons to show different years - especially 1004 AC and 1010 AC. (I could make 1000 AC too, of course, but for now it is assumed that everything is 1000 AC - and second era hex art - unless otherwise marked.)
