Lake Klintest Monster HW connection?

Postby Havard » Wed Jul 26, 2017 10:25 am

The Lake Klintest Monster comes from the Rockhome Gazetteer and is Mystara's equivalent of the Loch Ness Monster. IIRC there is a similar creature in PC1 too.

If the Lake Klintest Monster is a kind of Dinosaur that survived from a bygone age, could it have relatives in the Hollow World?

Another thing I was wondering about, if we borrow a page from the Godzilla mythology, could there be a more complex history to these creatures?

That's an interesting idea!
The Shimmering Lands dwarves (of BC 2300) definitely used old Blackmoorian magitech, along with the radiance... so it's possible that you could introduce the idea of a radiance generated monster like Godzilla living in the lake. Might be able to work in the idea that the monster is a "punishment" of a sort, for past mistakes.

There is a creature in PC1 that is similar (can't recall its name offhand); there is also the Lochnar that roams in the seas off the coasts of Vestland and Ostland (from X13).

How deep is Lake Klintest? Could the monster swim from the Hollow World and back?

It's doubtful that there would be a physical passage (filled with water) between Lake Klintest and somewhere in the HW... however it is possible. There are also examples of portals that essentially link the outer ocean and the inner oceans (IIRC). I'm thinking about the adventure with the "sun undead"... can't remember what that was called.

Knew that idea sounded familiar! "That Sinking Feeling" from the Hollow World Adventure Book: ten-little-indians-like scenario aboard a ship sucked into the Hollow World, carrying the sun-wight's sarcophagus, and... well, a sun-wight's gotta eat....
