Brute Man Subraces?

Post by Havard » Sun Mar 25, 2018 11:27 pm

Reading at CNN about Denisovans got me thinking. Should Brute Men have subraces like Neanderthals, Denisovans, Floriensis etc? Maybe ala the Rakasta & Lupin articles?

Probably it would make sense, particuarly if the brute men existed in Mystara as one of the main humanoid race for an extensive period. Maybe there were brute hin and elves in Davania, brute dwarves in Brun and Brute men in Skothar.

I'm not really a big fan of subraces in general, so I pretty much cringe any more when they come up. It is always especially odd to me given that (generally) there are never any subraces of humans yet elves, dwarves, etc. all have several.

That said, I can see a rationale for it in this case, as the "subraces" being proposed are actually all different species of humanity at different times and locations (albeit sometimes overlapping). I'm not sure Mystara's timeline really supports it, though, and it certainly adds complications as to where and how to locate them within the HW (their currently allocated lands are very small for even just one group).

I'd actually be a bit more inclined to go Sturm's route, and have the different species instead be connected to existing "modern" races like humans, elves, dwarves, etc. If one was to decide that they needed mechanical differences for them in the first place, that is.

Like I said, though, I'm definitely in the anti-"subrace" crowd (full disclosure).
