Some new painting style maps

Post by Argentmantle » Thu Mar 14, 2019 11:54 pm

I'm working on some new material for an upcoming game and figured I'd drop by and post some of it here.

The standard version...
Image

This version is slightly oddly shaped as it is based on Thorf's map including part of the Arm of the Immortals from the Orc's Head Peninsula and Dragion (IIRC) materials. It was sorta tacked on to the original materials in the web materials.

Image

I wanted to include a painting style map of Mystara that is going into the same bucket.

Image

And somedays, its just fun to have a rotating globe.
Image

If anyone needs them, I have some basic heightmaps for the Savage Coast and Mystara if anyone needs them.

Oooh! So this is a 3D model of Mystara then!

That's exciting!

Are you going to be able to make the Polar Openings into the Hollow World, or are you working with software that only assumes a spherical planet?

(I've been wondering if Mystara fans might have to crowdfund the development of software that can fold colour maps and height maps onto the outside and inside of a hollow sphere with holes in the poles.)

So, the software assumes a spherical planet... it can be tricked.. to a point, i.e. adding shadow to the area but realistically, it looks like a sphere with a black spot on the poles.

I think this one fits pretty well... it gives a pretty clear view of the northern polar entry.

What did you use as a basis for your height maps outside the more detailed areas(Savage coast and the known world), ie skothar and davania. Did you generate heights randomly, based on paleological data, or just by fiat?

I started with the map from the Hollow World boxed set as the initial reference. I.e. building the basic structures...

And then... Godwana and Laurasia for height references. Its not an exact science or copy, but it gives a great starting point.

And

I start assembling masks from there. The first is a basic land layer, than one that is a base elevation (i.e. it gets higher away from the oceans), and then masks that contain shapes for the mountain ranges. After that, I return to the original piece and search for other images of Mystara for inspiration on how to handle areas that I was uncertain about.

Awesome looking work, Argentmantle!

What programs are you using for those maps and the globe?

Photoshop for the maps, though GIMP could've done the same. The globe was created by a free tool at https://www.maptoglobe.com/. I did a similar version with After Effects. My video production skill aren't that good, so it didn't look any better than the one made with the tool.
