Tortle NPCs from Mystara and Non-Mystara sources

Post by Havard »

BECMI Tortle Characters
  • Abbot of Dunwick (Dragon #179) - It is not specified that the Abbot is a Tortle, but more than half of the population of Dunwick are Tortles and he does send a group of Tortle Mystics into goblin lands where they encounter the crew of the Princess Ark.
  • The Tortle Mystics (Dragon #179) - We don't get the names of these Tortles, but I think we can all guess who they were based on ;)
  • Kallot the Sage (Dungeon #6) - one of the few Tortles who have travelled from the Savage Coast to the Known World.
  • The Sand Beach Tortle (X9 p6)
  • The Brown Sand Tortle (X9 p6)
  • The Twin Islands Peninsula Tortle (X9 p6) - This female tortle also has two newly hatched "torts".
Note: There were more unnamed Tortles in X9, but I only included the ones that were unique characters and not listed as a group.

AD&D 2nd Edition Tortle Characters
  • Company of the Shell (Red Steel) - This organization only accepts Tortle members. AFAIK none are named, sadly.
D&D 5th Edition Tortle Characters

(Not officially connected to Mystara)
  • Eeyal, a tortle guide from Fort Beluarian wearing goggles to protect her eyes from volcanic ash (The Tortle Package)
  • Kwilgok, a guide from Port Nyanzaru working for a merchant prince (The Tortle Package)
  • Mudgraw, a tortle druid from Ahoyhoy (a Tortle Fort/Settlement) who can be hired by the PCs as a guide (The Tortle Package)
  • Krull, Tortle Death Domain Cleric
  • Orly Skiffback (Mattthew Mercers character from Critical Role)
  • Grimalda, an old female Tortle Shaman from the Explorer's Guide to Wildemount (2020).

Nice!

I haven't read those books yet, but have added him to the list! :)

I'd totally forgotten about Clothahump. I used to really love Foster's Spellsinger series. There is at least one that I never read, though (I believe it was a "next generation" sort of story with Jontom's son in it.)

That would be "Son of Spellsinger". If I remember correctly the last one "Chorus Skating" is back to Jontom himself (they are all downstairs, but I am too lazy to check).

I was trying to remember the name of the Hanna-Barbera cartoon turtle, Touche Turtle - a swashbuckling rogue touring the Baronies if ever there was inspiration needed for such a character, and came across a larger list of fictional turtles than I had realised - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fictional_turtles

Depending on how far you want to reach for tortle inspirations, you could always have an analogue of the Terrific Whatzit, a tortle that has the red blur power (or the Red Curse equivalent). Rather than be a WWII veteran, he could be a veteran of the Baronial wars of the late 9th century on the Savage Coast.

He may even have a nephew or two who inherited his powers (like Fastback and/or the Crash).

And Dumdum fits due to the dog-folk (whose name annoyingly escapes me) that live in the vicinity!

Now you've got me picturing a lupin version of Huckleberry Hound running around the Savage Coast.

Given the preponderance of anthropomorphic animals in cartoons, and having looked at Hanna-Barbera cartoons wen looking at other tortles this does show some holes in the anthropomorphic races which the Mystara gameworld also has several on. We need some hyena-folk, squirrel-folk, donkey-folk amongst others I'm sure.

Although some of these might not be totally appropriate hyena-folk does seem an appropriate race however for Mystara. Maybe the hyena-folk might be an idea, they probably wouldn't be too numerous, competing with lupins and gnolls and hutaakans besides.

I've added this character to the list.

In my own private canon, all Tortles come from Mystara. Its cool that the Tal'Dorei material incorporates Tortles, but it seems that the races has a very marginal place in the setting similar to how it was incorporated into the Forgotten Realms across various 5E books. That makes it easy to keep with my assumption that these are visitors from Mystara. Travelling through old Dravi portals perhaps?

It's more space opera than fantasy, but there are also the Clutch Turtles from the Liaden Universe books. They're large (average size around 9' and 400 pounds/2.74m and 180 kg), long-lived (elders can be over 1,000 years old), and known for making the best knives in the universe (they grow them from crystals, and they're very patient). Names are quite long - the most commonly encountered one in the series is Eleventh Shell Fifth Hatched Knife Clan of Middle River's Spring Spawn of Farmer Greentrees of the Spearmakers Den: The Edger, commonly just referred to as Edger. Others include Sheather, Handler, Selector, Watcher, Seeder, Nurturer, and Emissary Twelve.
