Enduk Inspiration?

Postby Cthulhudrew » Sun Jul 25, 2010 8:49 am

I'm not sure what particular Mesopotamian culture was the inspiration for the Enduk civilization- are they supposed to be more Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian, or Assyrian? (If it was any single one). Wondering if you guys have any ideas. Offhand, I'm thinking maybe they were supposed to be more M-Sumerian, with the Sokhtar then being M-Akkadian.

The Enduks are most closely identified with Sumeria or Sumero-Akkad. You can see this in the people and place names below, with similar RW names.

Enduk - Enkidu (Sumerian)
Gildesh, Herald of Idu [also Gildesh Fortress] - Gilgamesh (Sumerian)
Urduk - Uruk, Ur (Summerian)
Sardon - Sargon (Akkadian)
Erdu - Eridu (Sumerian)
Other Names: Eshu, Enveh, Masur, Eneser River
Minoides is Greek-stylized, appropriate to the founding father of traditional minotaurs.

The rise of Akkad marked the close of the Classic Period of Sumer, but aside from the introduction of transnational tyranny under Sargon and the growing use of the Semitic Akkadian language, it was culturally a continuation of the Sumerian city-states in many regards.

The Nimmurian manscorpions are clearly in the Babylo-Assyrian style, again which can be seen in the name choices.

Nimmur - Nippur (Sumerian), Nimrud (Assyrian)
Arbamaneser - Shalmaneser (Assyrian)
Suneveh - Nineveh (Assyrian)
Nin-Hurabi - Hammurabi (Babylonian)
Shumunna - Enheduanna (Akkadian), Enshakushanna (Akkadian)
Anusardapal - Ashurbanipal (Assyrian)
Nabuchalassar - Nebuchadnezzar (Babylonian)
Amma-Sin - Naram-Sin (Akkadian)
Umarduk - Marduk (Babylonian)
Um-Nileser - Tiglath-Pileser (Assyrian)
Others: Nin-Shurgon, Ennamasur, Shubat-Nammu, Darganesar

Note that Assyrian and Babylonian langauges developed from Akkadian. Not all Nimmurian place-names appear in the Assyro-Babylonian tradition - some are hold overs from the M-Sumerian period of the Enduks, others seem to combine elements (e.g. Gilduk and Mardesh)

Er - Ur (Sumerian)
Sur - Ur (Sumerian)
Ganlil River - Enlil (Sumerian)
Desh - Kish (Sumerian)
Ankesh - Kish (Sumerian)
Um-Shedu - Shedu (Sumerian)
Others: Shuruk, Eshnu, Ekiddu, Enshur, Gilduk, Unu, Mardesh,

you may also add Atzanteotl's name "MENLIL" that derives from the sumerian god ENLIL.
