Jester class?

Post by shesheyan » Mon May 14, 2018 12:13 pm

I played a Jester during an AD&D1E campaign. I located Dragon Magazine #60 as the source of the article. Did this class get a make over in other editions afterwards ?

EDIT ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- 2nd edition AD&D came out, they made the jester class a "kit" of Bards (a sub-class of Rogues).
- The 3.5 Dragon Compendium updated the Jester as a prestige class.
- There is also a Court Jester archetype (for the Bard) in Pathfinder 1E.
- It was also a bardic College in a 5e Unearthed Arcana release.

I think Jester made it as a kit in 2e, but that's as far as it got, I think. I kinda doubt it made it to 3e, although it might have been a prestige class in some d20 supplement.

It was also a bardic College in a 5e Unearthed Arcana release. It didn't make the cut for XGTE.

I LOVE the jester class. One of my unrealized dreams is to play one. Probably for the best, I am not at all funny. But this is just a brilliant class.

I've also never had a player willing to play one in a game I DM... I hope to add one as an NPC to a game soon.

Correct :
« Later, when 2nd edition AD&D came out, they made the jester class a "kit" of Bards (a sub-class of Rogues), which makes sense. But the official version is much less interesting than the 1st edition jester. »

Found this link on D&D Wiki :

For as long as time can remember, every king has had one, or several, Court Fools to aid him in entertainment. Not only were they used as pieces of performance, but also as a hidden ally to the King. At birth, they're trained in items such as instruments and knives, actions such as dancing and striking, and perseverance like no other. Despite their harsh treatment, name calling, sullying, and straight abuse, they are very proficient and very lethal assassins. Jesters (Court Fools), tend to purposefully do silly and rather dumb things to try and attract the idea of them being a defenseless, useless, and harmless patron. They are trained to speak in lies and charm the crowd with their speech pattern. A proper Jester can talk his way out of many things, and into many things. They have the ability to lie on the fly and do anything it takes to hide the truth without falter in their words.

After the demise of my female paladin, The White Maiden ( ), I needed something different in tone... then the Dragon Magazine arrived at the local store. I fell in love with the Jester class. The DM accepted my request and was allowed to play him. He didn't last very long sadly, compared with the power level of other characters, he didn't contribute enough to the fights. I retired him in favor of a Chaotic Good Cleric of Boccob.

I have a project I'm thinking about for my next mini-campaign, after the Blackmoor-Spelljammer cross over in currently working on. The general idea is a traveling circus goes around Mystara offering shows in cities and towns. Characters are members of the circus. A jester will fit perfectly in this type of urban intrigue campaign. ;)

The OSR game Adventures Dark & Deep is intended to be a "what-if" system that looks at how a 2nd edition of AD&D would've evolved had Gary Gygax been involved. The Jester is included as a class in the system, and is based on the version in Dragon.

You can take a look at the whole system or just check out the Bard (for $1).

Played a duelist, from that same issue, but not a jester.

I felt the duelist was underpowered as well, compared to a fighter, the classes in that issue were kinda cool, but didn't really last in our games.

It was the same with the Ninja class I let one of my players use. He was very good at evading damage but couldn't deliver any in return. It was very strange to watch. Avoid damage... fail to hit...avoid damage... fail to hit... my player decided to play something else after two games.

I think that is why they were called NPC classes. If a DM decided to use them he could give them 3-5 levels above the level of the party to make them threatening. But as a class that follows the progression of other classes they were simply underpowered and not fun to play.

They would occasionally collect the character classes in the anthologies, but they all appeared elsewhere first :)
