Forum Purpose

Post by Ashtagon » Sat Apr 17, 2010 10:02 am

Just to clarify, this board is here to discuss rules questions related to both AD&D (1st edition) and Original D&D, which was published as a series of pale brown books.

Classic D&D (aka "B/X", "BECMI", or "Rules Cyclopedia") has its own forum, which is here.

Anything to do with the old school revival (OSR) gaming belongs in whichever forum the particular OSR rules set is designed to resemble. For example, Dark Dungeons is technically an OSR system, but it would be more appropriate to discuss it in the BECMI board rather than this one.

OSRIC specifically (http://www.knights-n-knaves.com/osric/) would be included in this board's purpose.

Where does the 1977 Holmes D&D go? I would suggest here, as it has more in common with OD&D/AD&D than B/X and the rest of the Classic line.

I agree... especially as it was specifically designed as a "lead-in" for 1E AD&D.

Or perhaps we could start enough threads to qualify for a separate forum for OD&D and Holmes D&D?

Ah, okay. I can see that. I thought it was something specific against an OD&D Forum :)

My issue is that quite often these "let's start enough threads to justify a forum" create artificial levels of interest. They peak at just high enough to justify making the forum, then relevant posts rapidly drop to almost nothing, creating a forum that is essentially dead, but which I can't justify removing and remerging. I'd prefer teh interest be real rather than artificially generated, but realistically with such an old rules set, that won't happen.

You have a very good point here. I agree about artifically generated interest spawning new forums is a bad idea. I wouldnt be so sure that the old age of OD&D (1974 edition) is small though. There is a lot of discussion of this particular ruleset on the blogopshere and on various more "old school" oriented forums. The advantage OD&D has is that it stands out as very different from the WotC era editions.

Whether this interest exists here is another matter of course. Currently I would say no, or someone had started a discussion about it earlier.

Holmes D&D is a different matter, since it is little more than an intro set, with the level range limited to 1st-3rd.

Still, the overall interest level for OD&D on The Piazza is pretty low... and since the same really could be said for 1E AD&D (despite it being my preferred version), I see no problem with both (and their hybrid offspring, Holmes D&D) being in the same sub-forum.

However, a re-naming to better clarify the content might be in order.

Perhaps something like: Gygax's D&D: From Men & Magic to Unearthed Arcana; OD&D, Holmes, & AD&D 1E
Catapultam habeo. Nisi pecuniam omnem mihi dabis, ad caput tuum saxum immane mittam.

I think there is a lawsuit out there proving that this is not Gygax' D&D.

Personally, I agree with the intentions of the Sock. (Even though that sounds wrong.)
