Essence of Evil

Weird red metals, dominions, immortals, hollow planets, invisible moons, and a lot of glorified magic zeppelins. It's all here.

Essence of Evil

Post by Seer of Yhog » Mon Nov 23, 2009 1:49 pm

I didn't find any mention of this elsewhere on the Piazza, so I don't think I'm repeating this...

While browsing last night, I came across a downloadable module on Wizards entitled "Essence of Evil". Seemed interesting, so I scanned through it and found, near the end, a sidebar providing suggestions for modifying the adventure to suit other campaign worlds. Whenever I see these I always look for Mystara, and this time I wasn't disappointed!

Lo and behold, the designers have suggested recasting the main villain/challenge of the module as [loose quote] "a servitor of the Outer Beings who has escaped his masters' prison dimension". It goes on to suggest that it could seed all sorts of abominations across the planet for the PCs to fight.

There you have it - if that isn't recognition of our vision, I don't know what it is. :D

Whoah!

Excellent, excellent!

Ofcourse, they could have credited you for the invention of the OBs...

Do you have a link for the module?

Unfortunately I can't share a link here, but if you do a Google search for "Essence of Evil", it should be the third one down on the first page. It was written by Robert Schwalb, IIRC.

On the matter of credit where it's due, I agree. At the very least, the community should be acknowledged. I seem to recall there was a policy posted somewhere on Wizards, to the effect that anything we post there becomes public. However, I don't see why they shouldn't acknowledge where some ideas came from.

Anyhow, it was late last night when I found it, but I'm inclined to drop Mr. Schwalb a line personally on the matter.

Thanks for the link, Geoff. I'm going to have to check this adventure out.

I'd love to hear what he has to say.

Uhm, the adventure is rather old -- IIRC, it dates to the last days of 3e. You probably didn't find mention here because, at that time, we were still mostly on the WotC board. Here is the relevant discussion:

Hmmm.

Well, not surprising I never heard of it, given I haven't set foot in Wizardland since before the rise of the Piazza. However, the fact remains they did acknowledge our work, and they may do so again in future. This sets a precedent, and I don't see the harm in thanking Mr. Schwalb for his courtesy, welcoming him to do so again in future, and asking whether a note or update could be posted acknowledging what we did, or whether WotC could do so whenever it mentions the Outer Beings in Mystara in future.

Anyhow, my 2 cents...

You are correct about the WotC forum thing. Ive also seen it happen on other fora. I'm guessing Schwalb didnt intentionally steal your ideas though. He probably assumed they were part of canon. We do tend to talk about them as if they were 8-)

Here's the relevant paragraph from the module:
Mystara: Spawned by the united will of the Outer Beings, Shothragot instead emerges from the Nightmare Dimension intent on raining death and destruction upon the world. As it passes over the lands, it births countless abominations, seeding the world with creations born from the diseased minds of inexplicable forces of chaos and entropy.

A good way of doing it. You could also invite him here so we can talk about the module with him? :)

Anyway, I am adding the module to the list of 3E items produced for Mystara!

BTW, here's where you download it, for future reference:

Thanks - will do! If nothing else, this thread has brought another Mystara-compatible adventure to light.

Is this particular cover based off an existing WoTC/TSR scheme? I really like the bold but clean look: background color, SETTING, and the title towards the bottom of the art element.

Now I want to set up something similar for the TC Adventure Path....

Hmm, maybe for the 4e conversion-version... :x

Well, it is based on the BECMI module color scheme, but I replaced the D&D logo with the Mystara one. This module is for 3E so using the Classic D&D logo didnt make sense.
