[Threshold] Choose the next themes of Threshold magazine!

Post by Sturm » Thu Feb 22, 2018 3:34 pm

Hi all, the Threshold editorial team needs to plan future issues on time, so even if we already know what will be the themes of:
Issue #19, on Planes and Immortals, due in April 2018
Issue#20, on Skothar, due in July 2018
Issue#21 on Specularum, due in October 2018
We have to choose now themes for the issues planned in 2019, and you may cast your vote!
Note that the vote of people willing to contribute to a theme, not just read it, will count more because we need to fill the issues with content :) So if you are also willing to write something on a theme, not just read it, please post here in the thread and let us know!
You can choose multiple options. The poll contains options tossed out in the Editorial forum, but you can also post to add more!
The more voted themes will be produced first.
Vote!

Quick point - it is "Dynasties" not "Dinasties".

My "Other" is realted to "Heroes and Villans" - it's "Characters and Corporations"

Thanks corrected!
Yeah probably the concept of Heroes and Villains is subject to expansions, but always good to specify!

I wonder if these topics - Dynasties, Heroes and Villains, Characters and Corporations - might all be related to the same theme. In general it sounds like we may want to take a look at the "Movers and Shakers" of Mystara (that's a horrible title ;) ). Who are the big NPCs and organizations that might help drive PCs or shape their careers? I like that idea a lot.

That kind of topic also may play into the generation of plots and campaign arcs fairly well.

Future ages along with campaigns and adventures --
I would like to see some of this, but it can be tricky since there are people like myself who didn't really like WotI and how WotC implemented unnecessary change by sinking Alphatia.
Possibly could have been presented different and I would have liked it, but the current state of that change seemed sub-optimal.

There are actually quite a few "alternative" scenarios out there verses how WotI played out (the biggest I can recall at the moment is the World in Flames scenario by Bruce Heard). Those could definitely supply some material.

But Future ages doesn't need to be restricted to the "near future" either. We could go as far into the future as we wanted. There were some other campaign altering ideas discussed on these boards (and I think even before) - Hollow World Invasion, where the HW nations journey to the surface world and begin their conquests. Ravenmoor, where Blackmoor "escapes" from the Ravenloft plane and tries to reclaim it's heritage on Mystara. I think we ran some AC 2000 and AC 3000 scenarios as well.

I voted for trade routes. I'd love to submit my GAZ11 updated trade map that uses GAZ9's poster map's colours.

And I'd love it even more if some intrepid cartographers used the symbols that I put together and posted some years ago to expand the trade map coverage. ;)

2 Magic and Antimagic zones
3 Locations past/present combined open for DM input
4 Strongholds like https://6inchnails.deviantart.com/art/C ... -663727724
5 Flora and Fauna (including monsters) new additions

amongst others...;P and yes I am willing to write and maybe able too...then (now busy with my secret project)

Although there’s already been an issue devoted to Thyatis and Alphatia, those empires are so huge that the surface has barely been scratched. I certainly have more material that I could submit to an issue revisiting those areas.

Please note that Skothar is already scheduled for issue #20, to be published in July. The Call for Contributors will be up soon.
Also the Isle of Dawn was partially treated by me in Issue #11. I would be more than willing to see another issue on it, but it's a bit hard to predict if there are people really willing to write something more about it. Because I already wrote more or less all I had.
Anyway it seems for now Adventures, NPCs and Strongholds are the preferred themes, but please keep voting :)

I voted this way also, but my interest lies in alternative replacements for Darokin of canon. Perhaps I am more interested in replacement cultures for certain regions from southern Brun... Ylaruam, Alfheim, The Atruaghin Clans and The Minrothad Guilds come to mind.

Yes Alternative Mystara would also be a good theme, as here: http://www.pandius.com/msliders.html from a Thread in The Piazza.

I would be less interested in an alternative Mystara than alternate cultures, as here: http://pandius.com/ramelinm.html

There is nothing wrong with reimagining the world, but sweeping changes negate all the extensive canon and fanon works that detail Mystara. Replacing that obnoxious, small piece of Mystara in an interchangeable way would be useful. For example, Ignacio's Kohryvian Dales may be seen in some eyes to fix the glaring issue of an unrealistic geographic area marring an otherwise fine game world.

Alternate Mystara always start from canon and build something different based on it, so I do not really see the difference between Ramelin's Mystara and other people's Mystara. What's obnoxious and what are sweeping changes and what is/are not is just a matter of personal opinions.
Anyway such an issue could be produced only if there are multiple contributors with multiple different views, as a monographic issue on a specific campaign of a specific fan may not be much of interest for others.

I propose an issue on Wars and Battles.

Submissions would be to expand on any major war or battle of Mystara's past. Ideally some articles would provide maps and stats for units so people could play out the scenario on the tabletop. The author can use whatever wargaming or miniature ruleset they prefer, people can just convert as necessary. BECMI Warmachine would be an obvious first choice.

I'm not suggesting taking Ramelin's Mystara... or any other... whole cloth. I would have no interest in any author's alternative Mystara. I think the manner in which Ignacio presents alternate cultures would be an interesting approach to a Threshold theme. More than just a nugget of an idea. Less than a gazetteer. With some developed maps to support the idea.

The theme would be alternate cultures rather than an alternate Mystara. Interchangeable in the sense than DM's can switch canon cultures with alternates without too much disruption. A 3 to 10 page Threshold article could be devoted to each of 5 to 10 cultures that have given rise to much debate within the Mystara community over the years.
