Mystara 5E Wrath of the Immortals Conversion Project

Weird red metals, dominions, immortals, hollow planets, invisible moons, and a lot of glorified magic zeppelins. It's all here.

Mystara 5E Wrath of the Immortals Conversion Project

Post by thedarkelf007 » Wed Jan 08, 2020 1:21 am

Hi All,

I am working on my own conversion for Mystara to 5E based around the Wrath of the Immortals and was wondering if people here would be interested in my ideas and concepts?

You can find most of the information I have put out here:

https://thedarkelf007.home.blog/blog/du ... ying-game/

There are a lot of changes in there and I am happy to discuss why I have done most of them, though the write up for each should cover most of that (happy to add more details when asked).

This is a personal project, is straying from cannon in a few directions (as I am including material from various sources) and is meant to be consistent in the long term for my players (I have three campaigns using it running at this time)

The premise of the campaign is that the Wrath of the Immortals storyline goes from AC 1000 to AC 1019, characters advance 1 level a year, all the BECMI adventures are modified to fit into this timeline appropriate for the module level, all the GAZ adventures are also adapted, then all Wizards 5E published modules are also adapted so the storylines coexist with the appropriate levels. This stretches out a lot of things to allow downtime and many options.

Its been a fun mental exercise to work with :)

Today's post is about downtime, this in particular relates to how downtime will be working with the Secret Crafts and what you need to know about it.

https://thedarkelf007.home.blog/2020/01 ... et-crafts/

I post new content most days, but not always about my D&D campaign.

Hi TheDarkElf007!

Welcome to The Piazza!

I know very little about Mystara (and WotI), but thanks for sharing a link to your project. I can see that helping some other Mystara fans. :-)

You might want to pop over to Ashtagon's Introduce Yourself Here topic, say "hi" to everyone, and tell them a bit about yourself and the RPGs you like.

You might also want to add a link to your blog (or this topic) to your Piazza signature. (That way, if people like chatting to you, and want to check it out, they can find it from any of your posts.)

Today's post is about Magical Items, and this talks about the Ring of Water Walking and how it is now a relic of the genasi bloodline.

This is linked to the five element theme, as the Genasi being the most prominent aspect of that theme. So this provides an example of how I have integrated various concepts into a single item.

I think you will find people here are always interested in Mystara material and adaptions.
I like the ideas, but I did not like the original WotI, since it came out after we already had and played through all the previous modules.
All the retconning felt very lazy and the adventure felt lazy. (it just added stuff to the front and back of x10, and sprinkled in stuff you couldn't change as a player and DM for the finale without a lot of work)
Now if it had been done before I started playing maybe I would have had a different perception of WotI.

I had tried to modify WotI then realized by the time I was 15% done I was just throwing most of it out and still using the original modules and changing the GAZ timelines to fit the original modules. So I quit and just used and keep using that timeline.

This is nothing against your stuff, I like it, I was just typing thoughts I guess.

one last edit, if the ending is you win!! - Alphatia sinks, or you loose!! Alphatia sinks, that was not well received.
If there were several endings all across the spectrum, I would consider your conversion project a level of awesome.

I see what you mean.

I am not sure if saving Alphatia needs to be an option, but I do think that a range of possible outcomes depending on how well the PCs do would have been an improvement to the enjoyment of this campaign. I also think that it is better if the stakes are known to the players at an earlier point.

Perhaps the outcomes could have been:

High Success: Alphatia is destroyed, but preserved in the Hollow World
Moderate Success: Alphatia is destroyed and the Immortals are too late to intervene.
Failure: Alphatia is destroyed and the entire known world is turned into a toxic wasteland for the next century. Go play Gama World.

Obviously a failure here would be extremely anti-climatic, but it doesnt have to be a great chance of ending this badly. Ideally this should be built up and based around the degrees of success at earlier stages of the campaign.

There are many options in my storyline, including any of the five spheres being drained, each changing the world in a different way if that is the one that is selected.

Base options in mind:
- Choose a sphere to be the target of the drain (this is discussed as an option and has five outcomes)
- Shut the device down, it can't be restarted
- Fix the device so it operates as originally intended and and the characters now have a star drive at their disposal
- The device explodes

What happens to Alphatia is dependent on what the players are doing at the time. Also the protectors of hollow world will be based on the fallout of the storyline.

As of 7th level (with the final battle due around 19th to 20th level, the final battle is still undecided, and the material is working with little to no manipulation to make it work.

The published 5E material are taking more time as they were never designed to use with the downtime mechanics.

Each of the options does not have to be enacted, but they all have fallout one way or the other, there is no good choices to be made for the characters. In the current thread over three games running the same storyline, Wendar just got destroyed by an undead army thanks to the players.

Dungeons and Dragons 5E Update

As my weekly discussion, here I talk about how the gods are intrinsic in making the world survivable.

So every character who believes and follows a pantheon or a specific god gains a divine feature to their character sheet.

https://thedarkelf007.home.blog/2020/01 ... -features/

A player is more than welcome to have their character not follow a god or a pantheon, as long as they understand they give up death saves and their character dies when they are reduced to zero hit points.

The gods are important, and tied to the ongoing narrative of the setting. This is part of my design documentation for the setting.

Dungeons and Dragons Update on Downtime

Today's post is on Downtime for the buying or selling of magical items. This is a way for characters to try and get an item's value, if they do not wish to unload the item for 50% of the marked price (if the settlement can afford it).

Finding the right items also takes time, so just because you want something and it should be available in the settlement does not make it appear in the first shop you step into. Magic is not generally on display in most regions of the world.

This is for use in my Wrath of the Immortals 5E game set in Mystara and run in Canberra.

After many run time I have through of the campaign over the years (about 10 started and 6 finished, two reached the end) I have had my first group complete phase 1 Corren Keep with the best roleplaying of the lot. They actually only killed a few creatures (some bird, a spider and the Lord) and managed to work with the others.

The previous groups leader decided to be spiteful and pull out of the game, once he messed with the story by destroying the keep, killing everything there without talking (including the child guide) and making sure not a scrap of the keep was usable for anyone else including throwing the shield back down the well.

So was a pleasant surprise to have a group willing to roleplay. :)
