Mystara Project: Compiled 3E Monster List by Type/Subtype

Weird red metals, dominions, immortals, hollow planets, invisible moons, and a lot of glorified magic zeppelins. It's all here.

Mystara Project: Compiled 3E Monster List by Type/Subtype

Post by Knightfall » Sat Mar 16, 2013 5:21 am

Some of you might be wondering why I've been so eager to figure out which existing 3E monsters and races are appropriate to Mystara. The discussions I've created were meant not only to get ideas flowing, but also to help me compile a proper list of canonical creatures for use with a D&D 3rd Edition game. The process will be ongoing and I'm not sure how much time I'll be devoting to it.

What I have decided is that not only do I want a canonical list, but also semi-canonical and fanon lists. My main sources, for now, will be Monster Manual v.3.5, Monster Manual II (3.0), Monster Manual III (3.5), and Fiend Folio (3.0/3.5*). As the project goes on, I'll be going through the other v.3.5 books with monsters in them.
* While FF isn't a true v.3.5 book, a lot of its stats follow the v.3.5 format.

Any and all help will be appreciated. :D

MM v.3.5 Aberrations

Post by Knightfall » Sat Mar 16, 2013 5:35 am

I'm going to go through each type and subtype one by one, book by book. First up are the aberrations from MM v.3.5. The work-in-progress categories I've placed each creature in is based off the discussions I've already had here on The Piazza. I might not have caught every suggestion so remind me if I've missed something.

Have you checked Echohawk's Complete D&D Monster Index to see what he has listed?

Knightfall wrote:Beholder, Gauth
You could put gauths in Mystara if you wanted to, but I'm not aware of them in any Mystara product. They were Forgotten Realms creatures originally.

Beholders were supposed to have first entered Mystara as part of the Overlord's invasion (the same event that brought gem dragons and the Flaems [a human ethnic group] to Mystara), though some people have them on the world much earlier.
Choker
These were first introduced in the Dwarves of Rockhome gazetteer, so it's very Mystaran.
Cloaker
I don't think these are Mystaran. The closest thing I'm aware of is the shadow symbiont in the Savage Coast Monstrous Compendium, which can take the form of a cloak. They're not the same thing, though.
Phasm (Origin: Mystara?)
Maybe, if you assume it's the same thing as a scamille.

Have you seen the origins of creatures in the Creature Catalogue thread? You might find it useful.

Also see Let's Talk about Rules Cyclopedia Monsters for a list of (and some discussion of) all the monsters in the Rules Cyclopedia. Havard's product list also describes which 3e products have particularly Mystaran things in them.
Chuul
These are new to 3e. They might have been used in the Savage Tide adventure path, but that's really only semi-Mystara.
Delver
Destrachan
Ethereal Filcher
Ettercap
Nope.
Ghaur :?:
This creature never appeared in any book. It may be a typo for ghour or gauth.
Gibbering Mouther
From Lost Shrine of Tamoachan originally. Not used in Mystara as far as I know, though they'd fit.
Grick
New to 3e.
Mimic
Called a polymar in Mystara.
Naga, Dark
Naga, Guardian
Naga, Spirit
Naga, Water
There aren't any nagas in Mystara officially, though various fan works include them.
Skum
Not officially.
Will-o'-Wisp
Called wychglows in Mystara.

Thanks for the lists and links; it will be helpful with my own project. I figured that people had gone through and done something like this before, but I want to create my own list. (I'm weird that way.) Plus, it will help me better understand Mystaran Monsterology, so to speak. :D

No, I wasn't aware of this index, but I'm not surprised that Echohawk has done this work. He's a listing/indexing machine!

Post by Knightfall » Sun Mar 17, 2013 1:00 am

MM v.3.5 Animals
While it is probably safe to assume all the standard animals should be included in a v.3.5 Mystara campaign, I'd like some guidance regarding dinosaurs, dire animals, and the other animals listed, especially the Roc.

ripvanwormer's post lists "Dinosaur" and "Roc," but I'm curious to find out if dinosaurs should only be in the Hollow World or if they are present on the surface world too.

I think the 'Cave' Dinos would be a good fit for Hollow World.

There are also dinosaurs, megatheriums, indricotheres (grangeri), giant elk, and terror birds (sword beaks), on the Isle of Dread. Creatures like that should generally not be found outside lost world areas.

The Isle of Dread... I forgot about it.

Are there any unique 'Mystaran' names for any of the animals I've listed?

Subraces for the core races

Post by Knightfall » Wed Jan 04, 2017 11:55 pm

Okay, for the subraces of the core 3rd Edition races, which of them are considered canon and which ones aren't canon?

• For dwarves, where would deep dwarves and mountain dwarves originate? I saw something online that it could be possible to say Duergar are akin to dark dwarves (from the Northern Reaches).

• For elves, I know that drow are replaced by shadow elves. But what about the other subraces? I seem to remember there aren't half-elves in Mystara. Is that right? Also, I think I remember reading in my copy of Sea Peoples that there are aquatic elves. What about gray elves, wild elves, and wood elves.

EDIT: Found the listing for the aquatic elf on the Consolidated Creature Conversion Index.

• For gnomes, I seem to remember that Svirfneblin aren't canon, but what about forest gnomes?

• For halfings, I'm assuming there are tallfellows but what about the idea of deep halflings?

• For orcs, are there half-orcs that are half orc and half human? What about half orc and half something else?

That's all of the types/subtypes for MM v.3.5. All thoughts and suggestion are appreciated. :D

Re: Subraces for the core races

Post by Cthulhudrew » Thu Jan 05, 2017 6:56 am

Knightfall wrote:Okay, for the subraces of the core 3rd Edition races, which of them are considered canon and which ones aren't canon?
Core 3E didn't have any subraces canonically. They only popped up again in supplementary campaign material or in some of the splatbooks (for some of the newer types, such as whisper gnomes, etc.)

That said, some suggestions for placing those subraces follow:
For dwarves, where would deep dwarves and mountain dwarves originate? I saw something online that it could be possible to say Duergar are akin to dark dwarves (from the Northern Reaches).
I'd say the standard Rockhome dwarves would be Mountain Dwarves; I'd also add the Thyatian Denwarf-Hurgon dwarves here. Hill Dwarves would be those found elsewhere, such as Karameikos and the Northern Reaches. Darokin dwarves would probably fit the bill of Hill Dwarves as well, although it's possible they are an even more "urban" sort of subrace (like Sundered Dwarves).

I don't think I'd have the Modrigswerg as Duergar. If anything, they seem more like Derro. There isn't really a Duergar equivalent known from canon. Or Deep Dwarves, for that matter. They could be easily enough placed, though. Bruce Heard wrote a bit about Shadow Dwarves who inhabit the caverns deep beneath Stoutfellow in Alphatia; perhaps these are Duergar?
For elves, I know that drow are replaced by shadow elves. But what about the other subraces? I seem to remember there aren't half-elves in Mystara. Is that right? Also, I think I remember reading in my copy of Sea Peoples that there are aquatic elves. What about gray elves, wild elves, and wood elves.
Canon is a bit iffy on the topic of half-elves. There are half-elves in the Kingdom of Eusdria in the Savage Coast, and there are humans who exhibit elvish attributes elsewhere (in Darokin, the Northern Reaches, at least one in Ierendi, as well as in the Yavdlom Divinarchy).

The standard Canolbarth/Alfheim Elf is probably a High Elf. There are definitely Aquatic Elves in various areas of the oceans, notably the Kingdom of Undersea in the Known World's Sea of Dread.

As you note, no drow, although the Schattenalfen of the Hollow World are probably a better drow stand-in than the Shadow Elves. The Shiye-Lawr of Alphatia could possibly be Gray Elves, or maybe Wood Elves. The wildest elves I can think of are the ones Haldemar encounters in the frozen wastes of Vulcania, but those might be Snow Elves rather than Wild Elves.
For gnomes, I seem to remember that Svirfneblin aren't canon, but what about forest gnomes?
There used to be a group of gnomes in the Falun Caverns in Soderfjord who were driven out/slain centuries ago. Its possible that they were (or their surviving descendants became) Svirfneblin. No real forest gnome stand-ins either, at least nothing I can think of offhand.

There is a subrace of Skygnome on Mystara, that has a lot in common with the Tinker Gnomes of Dragonlance, but also feature some more unique traits associated with sky creatures and the Plane of Air.
For halfings, I'm assuming there are tallfellows but what about the idea of deep halflings?
Most halflings would simply conform to the Hairfoots. The closest thing, canonically, to a Tallfellow is Mello the Halfling, who was a tall halfling that lived at the height of the Kingdom of Blackmoor (and stood at a height of over 5 feet tall!). Otherwise, there isn't really any indication that there are any different types of halflings in Mystara at all.
For orcs, are there half-orcs that are half orc and half human? What about half orc and half something else?
There are half-orcs. Darokin is noted specifically to have them (one presumes they are a sizable enough portion of the population then for it to be called out; doubtless due to the history of orcish and human conflict in and around Darokin). There is also at least one canon half-orc NPC in Glantri (Angus McClintock).

There aren't any known half-orc crossbreeds with any race other than humans. Some shadow elves are born with very disfigured features due to radiation poisoning (and possibly other reasons) and are often abandoned and left to be raised by orcs. It isn't entirely out of the realm of possibility to imagine that they might have half-orc/half-elf offspring, though the answer to that really depends on just whether you believe half-elves are possible (as noted above, canon contradicts itself on this point).

*Also, as a side note, at least one source has it that the noted Kobold King/Prince Kol XIV is actually a Shadow Elf and not a Kobold at all. He does canonically- from the same source- have children.

Thanks Cthulhudrew,

Lots of great information there!

I've updated my Humanoids/Monstrous Humanoids post a bit with some of your suggestions. I'm going to read through that Half-Elves thread tomorrow. It's time to go to bed.
