Why is Patera invisible from Mystara?

Weird red metals, dominions, immortals, hollow planets, invisible moons, and a lot of glorified magic zeppelins. It's all here.

Why is Patera invisible from Mystara?

Postby Angel Tarragon » Thu Mar 21, 2013 9:04 pm

I am curious as to which reason, if any, govern why reflected light from the atmosphere of Mystara doesn't shine onto Patera (the invisible moon).

Some magical property of the moon's core refracts wavelenghts of visible light around it. It is still noted to be visible in the infrared spectrum (back when races still had infravision).

Haldemar was gifted with a sizable chunk of the same material, which allows the Princess Ark to similarly become invisible.

That is very interesting. I wonder if it is possible to work out anything about that material.

How did Haldemar use that stuff? Did he keep it as a solid mass that caused some sort of "lens effect" around itself or did he grind it up and use it like some sort of anti-visibility paint?

IIRC it's a big hunk of rock sitting in the middle of his ship that can be "turned on or off", presumable by passing some form of energy through it (such as casting a spell on it)... not sure if they outline the exact mechanics in the VotPA, but they might.

It's says:
"This room contains the Myoshiman monolith that allows the Princess Ark to bend rays of light and become invisible. The bulkheads and beams here are ornately carved and decorated. Small wooden, busts of previous Alphatian rulers are located at the corners. The top of the monolith sticks out through a rectangular skylight overhead".
but I cannot find anywhere how it works exactly... it's clear however that can be turned on and off as Haldemar or Talasar do it several times in the narrative...

Berylith herself can turn the artifact on and off as well (I always just assumed that the others ordered Berylith to do it). So maybe she is channeling a portion of her own magical essence into the artifact to power it?

Boy did I have to dive deep to re-find this thread.

I'm developing a new world and I am considering drawing inspiration from Patera for my settings second moon. What resources (books and fannon) should I read to glean more insight on this satellite?

The best resource would be Voyage of the Princess Ark part 7 from Dragon #160. Some information might also be found in Champions of Mystara, but the first episodes are only summarized in that issue.

Also, there is GP's Myoshima Gazetteer which is free to download, offered via Pandius.com

Ahem... and also check out Threshold Issue #15 ;)

There is an adventure there set in Myoshima (on Patera), as well as several other articles detailing Damoclese before it exploded (from which many inhabitants of Patera probably came). All that is written by Agathokles, so it should be compatible with the Myoshiman Gaz that Havard mentioned.
