Developing The Sea Kingdoms **New Complete Map**

Postby oleck » Tue Oct 10, 2017 9:37 pm

NEW !!!! I develop a new map of the complete Sea Kingdoms. It's my vision but still, I'm not a great cartographer. What I imagine is that once there was a continent there but an asteroid destroys it. Now some of the Islands that survive were once part of the complete continent. and many others are from volcanic origins. Hope you like it, I try to do my best.

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BwFgwGca_BvpakJ4UndYdktMNEE

Well trying to develop an old idea of the 90´s I'm starting a project of developing The Sea Kingdoms. I'll start with this map hopping everybody like it and thinking it could be the start of charting that place. It might take time but I have a general idea of what to put on each island. I hope other authors can develop other areas and maybe in the future we could unify all in a big map.

Where I have advanced a little more is at Fearbolyt Island. Couse, I'm using some base information of my past work that I was trying to put at Skothar continent. If anyone wants to develop the other islands let me know so we can coordinate in things like trade routes or if there is any conflict, politics between both nations etc. Contact me at irvinggalvez@gmail.com if that's the case.

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BwFgwGca_BvpNXh2UkJVMlQyb0E

Posting General Idea

Fearbolyt Island

Being the biggest Island will have 2 countries or civilizations

The Black Swamp

Ill develop a nonevil lizardmen civilization as the most powerful in the archipelago. The Black Swamp will contain land and some undersea villages and the lizardmen will mount dinosaurs.

The Amarillo Desert

It is intended to have a nomadic kind of Armadillo humanoid culture.

Decaying Island

The Unforgiving Wastes

Will have a goblinoid kind of civilization or a gnome/dwarven civilization, or a mix of both jeje.

Esmerald island

Here I want to put a Nature civilization that can be elven or faerie etc..

Tremor Island

Here it will be an island filled with monsters with an old strange dungeon (maybe remains of an old blackmoorian Wizard that did experiments in the zone a long time ago. Or an ancient alien base.

Angry Cay

A place infested by undead (kind like Elegy Island). Where the other islands must make tributes to calm the island (A powerful undead) so that the peace continues.

Very cool. For goblinods, Dwarves and gnomes, I'd be careful to link them to the other presences of such beings in Mystara. For example, Rockhome dwarves originated in Rockhome, so you'll need to explain how the Sea Kingdom dwarves originated. Maybe they are pre-Blackmoorian, or they were saved by another Immortal rather than Kagyar. In both case, they might be considerably different from Rockhome dwarves.

Yes, i need to think very well. The good thing is that I can say anything survive from the destroy continent but still have to link all to the known immortals. But the first thing where I am going to work is on the east large islands. One island would dominate all other putting a culture that is the lizardmen. Another island I just thinking to take out the dwarf and gnomes and only leave some goblinoids or beastman descendants. And the other island that has elves it can be some sort of water elves.

I have more advanced information is on the lizardmen. Specifically, this three islands were a sandbox of a group of magic users and clerics of blackmoor. So there also can be some explanations about origins. Hopefully, I'll write something congruent.

Then, the question is: what led to the disappearance of the continent? The Great Rain of Fire? Or another cataclysm? What was on the continent during the Blackmoor age?

I might be inclined NOT to use a meteor but a huge volcanic eruotion instead...(something like The Tambora eruption 10 april 1815; 150 cubic kilometer of matter blown out, losing a third of its altitude; 4200 meter became 2800 meter...lowering temperatures globally 5 degrees for 3 years, caused by 4 tectonic plates pressed together and violently releasing energy).
Although Mystara has NO tectonic Plates but cells as Mystara is alive, the same effect could be achieved by lower grand cells exploding vilently (due some affliction).
This would enable the area to become extremely fertile for new life , and thus welcoming for animal and sentient life.

I advise this explosion to take Place at the moment of the Great Rain of Fire (3000 BC) and the affliction could be caused by the disaster itself as being misplaced cellular tension. As being a natural creature, it's main biological goal is trying to sustain itself and prevent great damage. Maybe this explosion of cells was needed to prevent Mystara from dying...or worse.
The Island before the blast could have been a large volcano in the middle encircled by several raised cells (due the pressure below) which have become large islands.
Another solution is the great Volcanic activity of 1750BC, but this will decrease the chances for other races, and block out the Blackmoor ideas you have already.

The blast would have wiped most vegetation away, covered a vast area with ash and debris, but already within a single year nature would reclaim the area, and within a decade most traces will be covered. Survivors would be possible on the far outskirsts (or external border) of the area and here the oldest villages would remain.

As the volcano did exist before the GRoF, all cultures/races would be of races/cultures existing in the Blackmoore era, thus Pre-Dwarves, Aquatic Elves,Gentle Folk Elves, Some beastmen, maybe even a rare dragon like the Gorynch (I have converted BECMI stats from Dragon Magazine if you are interested--just ask :ugeek: ).
Faeries would then belong to the newer settles, like Lizardmen, both appearing very soon after the blast.
Undead could be comprimised of "survivors" of the original inhabitants, having created a unique society in 4000 years.
Goblinoids would have been introduced to the region the lasts 500 years no sooner.
Depending on the location of this area...humans from neighbouring regions would have started to investigate/settle the region from about 1700 BC (after the great quackes of Mystara--which destroyed the

That's my opinion...see if this helps...nice maps btw ;)

The place could be connected to the histoy of Lhomarr and Y'hog by Geoff Gander, if you want:
http://pandius.com/lho_hist.html as the Lhomarrian moved from Skothar to Eastern Davania through the seas and the Carnifex of Y'hog tried to conquer all the Mystaran tropical zone..
Lhomarrians are basically Mystaran Atlantideans. They could also be the forgotten ancestors of all the Mystaran cultures inspired by the Middle East (Nithia, Ylaruam, ancient Alphatia, Hule, Yezchamenind empire, partially Nimmur and Eshu, Herath)
Oltecs and Elves also sailed those seas too, as they moved from Skothar and from Davania to the other continents before the Great Rain of Fire.
Dwarves and Gnomes could be present too as they were present in Blackmoor, so they would have moved at some point from their origin, possibly Brun, to Skothar. Nothing says they reached Southern Skothar and the Sea Kingdom, but anything could have happened in the time of chaos after the Great Rain of Fire.
Also people who should live in the area are the ancestors of the Makai of Ierendi and the Tanagoro of the Pearl Islands, so basically the Mystaran equivalents of Polynesians and Melanesians.
Giulio Caroletti here: http://pandius.com/romm_eth.html and here http://pandius.com/eth_ling.html supposed the Polynesian culture comes from Skotharian Rakasta.
In canon Makai are Neathar and Pearl Islanders are Tanagoro, but they are clearly based on Hawaians and Tahitians, i.e. both Polynesian cultures. The Mystaran Polynesian could be a mix of Oltecs and Tanagoro which developed in Southern Skothar.
Oriental cultures such as Ochaleans and Yasuko could have been influenced by rakasta too, as some other fan material supposes.
Gatormen and Frogfolks were also present in Blackmoor and could be appropriate for the area.

These are obviously just possibilities about the many cultures you could place in such a region.

Wow thanks a lot. That helps me open my vision on the project. Definitely, I need to research more still I'm going to be working in a group of islands I cant develop the whole place at once unless I just touch generally the islands. My intention is that each group of islands will be different kingdoms, but still, there should be life undersea. But i have to start from the general thing to the specific thing. So I have to develop a global history and timeline of the zone and then start working on the islands.

I have seen several of this post blackmoor explosion maps.

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BwFgwGca_BvpclBveUUwSWVqTkE

So what suppose to be that piece of land? Did it unite with another continent? Or what is that land in the actual game? Or can I use that as the land that was before the great crater of my map? Well, hope someone can help me here.

Also in here there is another map with some information on migrations

That show how we should see the sea kingdoms.

But still as shown here it could be more space between here

That fan map section was suggesting that the region known as Zyxl attached to Tangor
see this world map of current day http://pandius.com/master-outer-world-colour.png
even if you intend to use this to fit your Sea kingdoms..the region is waaaay too large to befit your maps....
I advise that your maps are a seperate region somewhere in the ocean (south of Tangorbay on your link)
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BwFgwGca_BvpclBveUUwSWVqTkE

But the region was unmapped as it was unknown to the fan who created the map according the tilt of the GRoF and the canon Mystara maps and Hollow world tilted Mystara post GRoF, calculated back

If you keep my suggested location the changed tilt would make the region from post GRoF temperate south continental to Tropical (or even subtropical) past GRoF calculating the tilt and placing it right on the text sea kingdoms,

In my suggestion of a volcano, there will be great oppurtunities for submarine sentient life; like Kopru (heatloving) and Kna, but also underwater elves; Best to read PC3-TSR9277-D&D-Mystara-Creature Crucible-The Sea People to learn more.

I also would suggest underwater volcanoes mountainous under water, maybe even surfacing in the middle, making the region a viable ecology

Where my suggested Gorynch could well survive

The first Treu Dragon was the red Hawk Dragon, a fully feathered creature, unlike the other species, came into existence around 6.000.000 years ago.
The Red, Blue, Black, Green, Sea and White Dragon races evolved almost simultaneously due to adaptation to environmental differences, between 5.000.000 and 4.500.000 years ago.
At about the same time the Three-headed Feywing evolved (due to enclosure and adaptation to a different environment) into the Gorynch.

Every idea is good. And definitely, I'm looking for a big volcano eruption that caused the destruction of that continent even, could be caused a chain reaction with other vulcanos of the zone like Krakatoa, all because of Blackmoor explosion. Reading about 1815 Indonesian eruption of Mount Tambora and 1883 island Krakatoa at Indonesia give me a good idea of what could happen there. All sea kingdoms could be devastated for years and then more years to be fertile again. So with that practically I can say it was repopulated again with migrations from Davanis specific could be from zones like Pelatan or Vulcania Peninsula inclusive some Alphatians.

What i have seen there where

Humans
Tanagoro
Oltecs
Heldanic
Maybe some Alphatians, Traldar and Nithians

Demi Humans
Elfs from south Davania, it is said there are many elves.
Gnomes dominate south Vulcania
Dwarves nos such a big comunity
Halfings very limited small clans

Humanoids
Orcs at Vulcania Peninsula and minor goblins.
Lizardmen (YESSSSS!!!!) and some troglodites.
Rakastas

Underwater
Aquarendis
Merrows
Tritons

So really is not that difficult to populate this islands. Everything can come from Davania.

Looking at the Hollow World boxed set pre-cataclysmic map (http://blackmoor.mystara.net/img/Blackm ... inents.jpg) it does not seem there was a disappeared large island in the area, so I always assumed the sea kingdoms have always been a series of small islands.
Obviously that does not mean you can't choose to assume differently.
About the precataclysmic map also note there are different opinions on the positions of continents, because the Hollow World boxed set map above tilted the world differently from what was previously described in the Gazetteer, hence the map by LoZompatore you linked above.
In the Gazetteer it was said that Blackmoor was somewhere on Brun while the Known World at the time was near or in the north pole, while the Hollow World boxed set later placed Blackmoor on Skothar and the north pole at the time in western Brun and not in the Known World.
I prefer the second idea, so I made a 72 miles per hexes map of 3500 BC (before the Great Rain of Fire) here http://pandius.com/m_ow3500.html which mirrors the Hollow World boxed set map above.
As explained above, in my version the Sea Kingdoms would be a island chains, the only difference between 3500 BC and now would be that they be a bit more to the north (http://pandius.com/motrwrld.html) with some changes in climate. I imagine the sea kingdom as covering a huge area between Skothar and Davania, so their climate could vary from sub-antartic for the southernmost islands to equatorial. Still on average the southern islands were more to the south before the cataclysm, and therefore colder.
However if the area at the time of Blackmoor was heavily travelled and influenced by the advanced Blackmoorian society, the cataclysm also had a major impact in material culture, I suppose.
About the populations, I imagine that gatormen, lizardmen, caymen and frogfolks should have been the first inhabitants of the islands. Before them, maybe just some elemental creatures, or hivebroods.
Later gyerians and rakasta could also have travelled to the islands.
The first humans to have reached them could have been the Lhomarrians (M-Atlantideans) then the Oltecs and the Tanagoro.
The mix of these cultures could have created the Mystaran Melanesian (darker skin tone, predominantly Tanagoro plus Lhomarrians) and Polynesians (lighter skin tone, predominantly Oltecs plus Lhomarrians).
At the time of Blackmoor more humans plus dwarves, elves, gnomes and halfling could have reached the islands too. The Blackmoorian hegemony could have tried to colonize the islands and spread technomagic items.
The Great Rain of Fire however could have led to native destroying Blackmoorian colonizers and their "cursed" technomagic items.
Also both before and after the cataclysm underwater races (shark-kin, kna, kopru, sea giants, merrows, tritons, nixies, sea elves) could have played a huge role in the history of the islands.
Also it's interesting that in canon the Makai are dated to 1,600 BC and the Tanagoro in the Pearl Islands to 1,000 BC.
These could have been times when the Sea Kingdom were almost unified under a M-Polynesian rule (Makai, so maybe from 2,000 to almost 1,000 BC) and under a M-Melanesian rule (Tanagoro in the Pearl Islands, so maybe from 1,100 BC to some centuries later).
Also the Milenians (M-greeks), who founded their empire in Davania after 1,000 BC and reached Minaea in Skothar after the fall of the Empire in 100 BC, could have played a big role in the history of the Sea Kingdom.
In Threshold issue #11 I imagined that the Milenians were a big sea power in eastern Davania and the Alphatian sea at least from 700 to 100 BC, with conflicts with the Alphatians.
Last but not least, the Alphatians could have reached the region in the last thousand years even if, considering their attitude, probably were individual powerful wizards rather than an organized imperial effort...

No, the island west of Davania is Evergrun, homeland of the elves. Evergrun was not present in the Hollow World boxed set map I linked above, but it was mentioned in Gazetteer 5, therefore some fans, such as LoZompatore (http://pandius.com/evergrun.html) and Omnibius (http://pandius.com/Evergrum.pdf) and me, developed it and choose to use it.
The sunken island to the east of Davania is instead what remains of Lhomarr, the lost continent developed by Geoff Gander which would be the Mystaran equivalent of Atlantis. In my pre-GRoF map I supposed the climate was colder, so sea levels lower.
The sea kingdoms in my map would be all the islands in the bottom right quadrant, you can see them if you zoom. However at that time, also the islands nearer to Evergrun and what remained of Lhomarr could have had relations with the sea kingdoms.
By the way a previous map showing the world when Lhomarr was still over the waves is here: http://pandius.com/m_ow8250.html

What is the most important to your work(s) is to determine its exact location(s) before making maps.
Sorry.. but it seems you do not actually know where these sea kingdoms are. :?
So here some help ;)

as by Master Boxed set
can be clearly seen that there are actually TWO sea kingdoms, a reasonable distance apart from eachother.
the western currently more tropical, the eastern currently more temperate.

as perDavania fan creationby the master set
As can be seen the western see kingdoms are located right making the eastern sea kingdoms located (as per master set) on the left location of the master map.

as the tilt of Mystara changed... these western sea kingdom were more or less near the polar circle of Pre Grof (take a line from the Vulcanian most easter point in the general direction of the continent(master map this is roughly NE, Davania pre-GRoF map this is more or less East-north-east (ENE) and would be more like greenland/north scandinavian in appearance as being almost against the preGRoF polar Ice(see here when estimating locations ; Fan map Davania Pre GRoF)
the easter Kingdoms thus were originally more sub tropical (almost ON the equator of Pre GRoF Mystara) and became more temperate ofter GRoF (see Master map).

not as the east and west seem to be exchanged in naming and orientation; it can only be assumed that the naming was done from the Davanian orientation going west (meeting first the eastern and further west the western, before reaching Davania again) or from the islands themselves. as only in these directions you will have the normal correct orientation.
To discern the best location according the master map using the davania fan map, you see the bay of the former Pelatan Jungle and recognize the same shape on the master map. on the master map the eastern sea kingdoms are located roughly north of the line from the bay (which was the equator preGroF).

If you use the map of the Hollow World box the western islands would be south oZyxl NE of Cape Fire at the Southern Tropic, (thus left on that map about 28 S.OW and 160W.OW), and the eastern would be more or less at 60 degrees S.OW and 135 W.OW

Both location greatly dictate climate what was pre GRoF and current.... and thus the environment, and population.
Western island would be more prone to be visited by Tangor (dark-skinned) people, while the eastern more by Davanian people. The eastern would surely be known by the elves in their former preGRoF nation of Evergrun
The western Island would have a more eroded feel due regular icing (similar to Greenland) but became covered with abundant vegetation ofter the GRoF. the eastern Islands it is exactly different. here the vegetation should have been more abundant and most plants died out or were exchanged with species more resistant to a colder climate. both these changes also affect the animal and sentient cultures greatly.

here the locations as I could best determine them following my above explanations;most canon-logical locations Sea Kingdoms

As taking these original sources into account, I would make the volcanic disaster to occur on the eastern islands as the dissapearance of lots of (regular or seasonal) ice would cause the pressure on the planet crust decrease and enable an increase in volcanic activity. there would be as almost no geological changes to the eastern islands as by orientation/climate change.
However; taking the planet's biological origin, and masive volcanic activity in 1750 BC, into account both locations could have been more geological active

Hope this helps. :ugeek: ;)

Wow, nice explanation from both. Yeah, that's the problem I didn't research a lot this time. And I really was using a map of my campaign. But still, i can use it in any of the two areas, but ill have to eliminate the complete map and just focus on a smaller set of islands. Still, I can use some of the maps because there is no exact map of the isles so maybe I can cover a set of 6 or 7 islands for the most equatorial area. Ill work on a new map but this time only for a shorter set of islands. And if I get the approval ill start developing. Thanks, Robin and Sturm. Your comments on maps are very important to me you both have vast experience on it.

And what I understand there are not necessarily connected both sea kingdoms or you think is a large group of islands that extend from the equator to the south? There is too much distance between both names.

And looking in this map http://pandius.com/geoff-gander-davania-72-1996-1998.png The set of islands east Hwungo Forrest could be the Sea kingdoms? And east Pelaten Shield that island could be the second Sea kingdoms? A closer look http://pandius.com/Davania_IzondianDeep_24mph.png

Hi oleck...nice to help.
I understand that you first made a map and now you try to bind this map to a Mystara location.
ok..nothing wrong with that...as long it befits the location.
and indeed you can make either location I suggested as THE location you used in your map.

No, indeed it canb't be a really long set of Islands, otherwise they have been detailed canon somehow earlier.

Geoff's awesome maps you could use too...although if you cross reference this with the canon master set the western sea Kingdoms fall left outside the map, and the eastern kingdoms according the genberal location on the Master map is the single island underneath the word "Far-End Ocean".
So if you assume both maps are accurate the eastern Sea kingdoms would have a single (about 25 mile diameter--as the hexes are 72 miles) island with probably several smaller islands nearby, or it has an underwater nation as per PC3-TSR9277-D&D-Mystara-Creature Crucible-The Sea People.

Yet as I look on this map of Geoff and resemble it with yours I see one region reasonably similar...as you suggested...the three larger islands west of Hwongo Forest (the SE one about 60 miles wide 85 miles long, the NW one of roughly 70 miles, and a smaller one NE of about 15 miles)...form a group of islands about 150 miles diameter.
you have to make some changes to either map, but that region looks more or less like your idea...maybe that befits your plans..it just needs some alterations to befit the larger islands, or viseversa

However I would NOT name this Sea Kingdoms then as these are located elsewhere canonnically...Just rename it then...and use your map (slightly readjusted) on that location.

Ideas; for names would be many, but I suggest the following; Islands of a Sundered Past (reflecting the disaster area you imagined), Tsunami Island (also reflecting the disaster, but as the source of many Tsunamis in the 4000 years since the GRoF hitting Final Bay, Hwqonga Forest and even Arm of the Immortals) or Tsunami Archipelago (after GRoF) as it is broken apart is.
but as said many possibilities,

Considering the biggest volcano crater on earth is The Toba Caldera approx 18X62 miles still adapting I could modify this islands in some way that I could redo my map in a shorter version. Still, I got a question how do you resize the hexes. I try to calculate but do you have any formula you use?

Don't be afraid to ask. ;)
Always willing to help. :ugeek:

As to hexmapping
Mystara uses 8 mile hexes, 24, and 72 mile hexes
the easiest way is in some paintprogram (I work in Windows paint)
make 1 blanc hex map (or pluck it from somewhere)
and over lay you blanc map translucent to the map you desire to improve in detail by going down in scale (72=3 24 miles hexes, or 9 8 mile hexes, and 24 miles =3 24 miles hexes), the rescale your translucent map (or the original map you intendd to improve) thus that your required number in your hexes fits from one original hex side to its opposite in the original hex. This might require some tricky measuring, but it works, use this link as a reference, but use less hexes within the larger hex (as stated above)
http://www.kjd-imc.org/wp-content/uploads/three-level-hex-map.pngIf you have done that, and it works fine, I myself work also in 1 mile, and some fans have made darokin in 2.66 mile hexes. so I need to recale in 8 hexes from 8 mile hexes, or 3 from 2.66 hexes
succes

btw https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympus_Mons is the largest volcano known to mankind, except the super caldera's which no longer resemble normal volcanoes.
It was suggested fanon (i believe to remember, as i work on this one due my Mystara Monster Manual Compilation book) that the large spot in the Izonda desert is a dead vocano of even greater size
