Languages in Davania

Weird red metals, dominions, immortals, hollow planets, invisible moons, and a lot of glorified magic zeppelins. It's all here.

Languages in Davania

Postby CmdrCorsiken » Tue Oct 17, 2017 8:33 pm

What languages would be spoken by the non-Thyatian inhabitants of the Hinterlands region of Davania? I seem to remember a diagram or flowchart of language development and dispersion, but it's been so long that I cannot recall where.

On a separate note, it has been far too long since I visited here. I hope this post represents the resumption of regular and frequent visits.

Don't the Hinterlanders speak Thratian? For some reason I seem to recall that being the name given their native tongue in one of the PWAs (probably PWA2/1012 AC).

Welcome back to The Piazza.

My Mystara-fu is poor, but I tried a Google search and got a Davania article on Cyclopedia Mystara. That recommended The Dungeon Master's Guide to Davania over at Vaults of Pandius.

I've not had time to read through it, but it lists some of the experts. Maybe we can ping one or more of them. ;)

fans more or less agree the Thratians (the inhabitants of the Hinterlands) speak a namesake language which should be similar/analog to Celtic/Irish, as they were presented as having a celtic-like culture in canon Mystara (in a tropical region however :)

Is Thratian a canonical term? I thought they were just referred to as Hinterlanders...

I believe the first use of the term is in PWA1012 (p.19) where it is listed as the Hinterlander's native language. I don't recall any usage of it outside of that in canon, but it is a canonical term. It has been expanded somewhat in fan materials since.
