Complete List of Mystaran Artifacts
I've been working with magic items of Mystara lately, and as part of that, I've been trying to compile a complete list of all Mystaran artifacts. I'd like as comprehensive a listing as possible with sources, and have a (long-term) goal of actually trying to flesh them all out according to the artifact rules; many of them have incomplete artifact listings or (for most) consist of little more than names.
The list I've got so far:
Amulet of Moira the Pure (DMR1)

*Note: Not all of these (such as many of the DMR1 magic items) are intended to be artifacts, but I think that- with the possibility of one or two- there is room to make them so by expanding on the histories given and powers indicated, and so have included them all here.
I did not include the list of suggested artifacts from the Master DM's Guide, as they were just suggestions absent more detailed information. Whether I will change my mind on that score or not remains to be seen.
If anyone can think of any that I've missed (I'm still going through various sources, and sometimes there isn't much more about them than a name, or perhaps just a description without a name), please let me know!

Cup of Silenus (M3) - only an artifact before M3 as it has just been drained to non-magic when the PCs get there (powering the gate out of Night).

Ah, yes. Thank you, Khedrac- I missed that one. I will include it (I included the Demon Gloves, which are also noted as now destroyed). It looks like I missed a bunch from IM3 and one or two from some other sources that I discovered last night as well.Khedrac wrote:Cup of Silenus (M3) - only an artifact before M3 as it has just been drained to non-magic when the PCs get there (powering the gate out of Night).

Re: Complete List of Mystaran Artifacts
I don't know anything about Mystaran artifacts, but if your long term goal is to go through all of these and build on the canon, I think it would be worth asking people to provide you with page numbers, along with the book names. Otherwise you are going to have to search the books, when you get to the next phase of the project.Cthulhudrew wrote:I've been working with magic items of Mystara lately, and as part of that, I've been trying to compile a complete list of all Mystaran artifacts. In the Shadow Elves Gazetteer (13) I remember there was an artifact under construction, that was meant to be a kind of duplicate of the Nucleus of the Spheres... I don't remember its name right now...

Re: Complete List of Mystaran Artifacts
I didn't include these items (nor the Pearl of Power or the gnomish one from Earthshaker) as they aren't specifically referred to as artifacts, but "relics." I am definitely on the fence about whether they should qualify in light of the post-Companions set inclusion of artifacts, though. As I recall, there is a distinction made between the Carven Oak of the Verdier (from Gaz9) and the Pearl of Power (and by extension other relics). What does everyone else think?Havard wrote:The Trees of Life

Do you mean the entirety of the floating isles? I'll double check the entry for Ar, as I'm not sure that they were necessarily artifacts. The Floating Ar (DotE)
Good suggestion. I think it almost certainly should qualify at this point, even if it was never made explicit. The Comeback Inn (DA1)
I've got this one under "Rheddrian's Staff."The Staff of Benekander (WotI)
Good catch. I'll go back to that source and check it out.The Smoking Mirror (HWA1)

D'oh! I added the Nucleus of the Spheres almost as an afterthought, and forgot to include the Chamber as well! Thanks guys!ripvanwormer wrote:The Chamber of the Spheres (Dungeon Master's Guide, pages 26-27).Yaztromo wrote:In the Shadow Elves Gazetteer (13) I remember there was an artifact under construction, that was meant to be a kind of duplicate of the Nucleus of the Spheres... Good point. I think I mostly have everything at this stage (and I have page numbers in my source document that I didn't include here), but I haven't gone through Dragon and Dungeon articles yet, so if anyone has any suggestions from those sources that I haven't gotten to, issue numbers (and/or page numbers) would definitely be helpful!Big Mac wrote:I don't know anything about Mystaran artifacts, but if your long term goal is to go through all of these and build on the canon, I think it would be worth asking people to provide you with page numbers, along with the book names. I'll be honest- I wasn't expecting there would be nearly so many as I have ended up with thus far. Even granted that some of them might not necessarily qualify or be good choices, this is still a pretty huge list!

Re: Complete List of Mystaran Artifacts
As my adventure Revenge of the little oneshas been made sort of canon due the championship, maybe you could include the Hoja too.In the last of the 4 documents, the last page it is described, its picture is a few pages earlier. http://pandius.com/The_Revenge_of_the_L ... ound_3.pdf
Was the needle and the tapestry from D&D-B10-Night's Dark Terror not a combined artifact?
There might also one or more be mentioned in the Almanacs?
Deck of Spheres DMR-TSR2512-AD&D2-Mystara-Dungeon Master Survival Kit page 5 to 9 (and including the printed cards within this box.
Several items Like those following in the other cards might be artifacts;
but i see you have those already
AC10, AC11, and the DM screen Spindle of Heaven might include one or more too.

Re: Complete List of Mystaran Artifacts
The elven trees of life (specifically the Mother Trees) are avatars of Ilsundal rather than artifacts. I think the same thing may be true for the Pearl of Power and Calitha Starbrow. I'm not so certain that the forges of power are avatars of Kagyar or that Blackflame is somehow an avatar of Ixion. Gaz 9 The Five Shires says that the Hierarch of the Sphere of Energy (Ixion) releases Blackflame into the world, so I suppose it could be his avatar, each flame invested with only a few of his hit points.
I guess the fact that they all act in basically the same way (Blackflame is the biggest outlier) suggests they might be the same basic thing: Immortal avatars.

Re: Complete List of Mystaran Artifacts
All the items in DMR1 seem to be unique magic items instead of artifact, in the sense they do not have power points. However, useful to have a list. Maybe it should also include the generical magical items of Basic, Expert and Companion.
Marco Dalmonte's third volume of The Tome of the Magic of Mystara, translated by Gary Davies: http://pandius.com/magical_research_art ... _rules.pdf has a list of artifacts and magical objects too.
(for the rest of the Tome see bottom of this page: http://pandius.com/mdalmont.html)

Hello Cthulhudrew,
Interesting thread! The only addition I can think of is the Wheel of Infinite Travel which is briefly detailed in module X9 -'The Savage Coast'. Although specific stats weren't provided, the module does explicitly state that it is an artifact.

Awesome! Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I did an initial pass on just about everything I can think of, and am in the process of doing a second pass, in hopes of finding little tidbits like this that are kind of buried in the material, but I still somehow managed to completely miss that entry. I'll add it to the list.Carillion wrote:Interesting thread! The only addition I can think of is the Wheel of Infinite Travel which is briefly detailed in module X9 -'The Savage Coast'. I've already got the Seat of Power. I'll have to double check, but I'm not sure the Endless Stair is an artifact.Havard wrote:WThe Endless Stair? (CM8)

I'll check on that one, too. It may not be an artifact (explicitly), but that doesn't mean it couldn't be one.The Septahenge / The Guardian Mesa Stone Circle (M3)?

Re: Complete List of Mystaran Artifacts
I don't see the Crystal Dagger of Cymorrak nor the Soulstone of Thanatps in X10 as typical artifacts...although they have clearly a history, powers and single goal.
Checked X10 page 13 column 1
;
X10 page 23 column 3
Prince Jherek of Glantri knows of the dagger and all its parts, and though he speaks of the mages working together to give aid and counsil, it is not mentioned they fabricated it.
X10 page 24 column 3 . Material description. Power Damage to Evil
if the PC's escape in the desert, a huge sandstorm transports (apparently magically) the PC's to Sayr Ulan AND urges them to enter
X10 page 28 column 2 Power of Directioning
X10 page 13 column 1 Main goal power of destroying Soulgem of Thanatos
The only way The Master can be defeated is for a PC to plunge the Crystal Dagger of Cymorrak into the Soulgem of Thanatos, thereby destroying both objects, giving 100 Electrical damage to the PC and thus causing The Master to age until destruction in 5 rounds.(ending his quest of Immortality and nuiance in the D&D world)
The sole power of theSoulgem of Thanatos was apparently only to increase the life expectancy of the master, and maybe his powers, nothing more as it seems.
both powerful items, maybe even immortal created, (but i think more created by followers of immortals) but not really artifacts in my opinion.
The dagger and his glantrian history combined with the Dragon items knowledge as in AC10-TSR9211-D&D-Mystara-Bestiary of Dragons and Giants suggests this was created by Diamond the Immortal Dragon. making it only 500 years old or less in 1000AC

X10 page 18 column 3The Lair of the Spectres is a forgotten, desecrated temple ruin approximately 10 miles from the halfling capital, in a gnarled wood. the temople is a modified Grecian-style building, consisting of one large (100'x100')room. Columns on the front of the building flank large iron double doors intricately carved with cabalistic symbols.
One of the gems in this treasure hoard radiates magic very strongly. it is a piece of intricately-carved crystal in the shape of a dagger hilt. No methods available to the PC's short of a Wish spell can reveal anything about this item. a Wish spell reveals that this is a piece of the mysterious Crystal Dagger of Cymorrak, but what the Crystal Dagger does is unknown. The hilt is worth 50.000gp by itself.
The Crystal Dagger is dangerous to the Master. The pieces are scattered in treasure hoards in the civilized lands.

X10 page 13 column 1 Historic mentioning and knowledge of need to use this.Clutched to his breast is a crystal blade that radiates magic. This, of course, is the blade of the Crystal Dagger of Cymorrak.
Prince Jherek of Glantri knows of the dagger and all its parts, and though he speaks of the mages working together to give aid and counsil, it is not mentioned they fabricated it.
X10 page 24 column 3 . Material description. Power Damage to Evil
X10 page 28 column 1 Power Translocation + Power UrgingOnce the soulgem is recovered, the Crystal Dagger can be assembled. The dagger is carved from a huge diamond. It glows with a soft, white light, and obviously radiates magic. it has no bonusses to hit, there are no command words, and it conveys no protection to its wielder. it is strongly good-aligned. if touched by anyone evil, that person immediately suffers 5d20 points of damage.
Laran cannot give the party any information on how the dagger is to be used without disturbing the delicate balance between the Immortal powers.
if the PC's escape in the desert, a huge sandstorm transports (apparently magically) the PC's to Sayr Ulan AND urges them to enter
X10 page 28 column 2 Power of Directioning
(or to the master himself??)The Crystal Dagger of Cymorrak will provide a directional signal to help lead the PC's through the maze of the city to the camp of the master.
