The Great Crater Conundrum

Weird red metals, dominions, immortals, hollow planets, invisible moons, and a lot of glorified magic zeppelins. It's all here.

The Great Crater Conundrum

Post by Robin » Fri Jan 12, 2018 10:10 am

Ok...it took a while, but with the help of several Scientists, Physics, (University Groningen,Amsterdam, Kapteyn Astronomical Institute, Radio-starwatch Westerbork) I now have finally a complete resolution how the Great Crater can be real without being a Global killer.

The scientists where initially instantly rejecting the possibility, until they were made clear that the planet is a huge biological entity and there are several magical effects active. Translating their near illegible scriptures back into the common word, and removing all the calculations....I have now for you the Mystara resolution of the Great Crater Conundrum.
To explain short; it is the biological structure and magic which prevents global killer meteors from becoming real global killers on Mystara.
Enjoy

I'm not familiar with how the Great Crater works in Mystara canon, but in Dragonlance, they actually have an asteroid impact knock parts of a contenent so deep that they turn into part of the sea...and yet, there are undestroyed buildings below the sea.

You are right about magic. Magic can do a lot of things.

The problem with the Great Crater of the Broken Lands is that its dimensions and effects did not match....and yet cannonnically there had to be a reason...with much debate and real scientific research this is the solution we came up with, and it takes into account a lot more than anybody expected.
Luckily we had a biological solution with magic protection to resolve it all....typically Mystara...

It only means that craters elsewhere are 1) unexpected (or in the planets dormant state)not slowed down by magic. 2) small caused by sharp and fast rectangular objects 3) actually not a real meteor crater but an exploded surface cell (this one would be common all over the planet and resposible for tidal waves on many coasts, but on land by specialists predicted decades or even centuries before) 4) created by objects from the planet(or coming in behind the Skyshield) and thus smaller (the scientists I mentioned spoke that a ring of dust and smaller craters up to half the planet with its center former Blackmoor would exist. these would have been created by molten stone/metals from the former empire. And be a cause of prolonged exposure to the Wasting Disease neear these locations.

One way or another the scientists had fun in this debate/research/calculations...:)

as to your sinking continent with intact buildings on a short and rapid thought storm; the only logical reason I can come up with is that the geological structure of that world had a large cave system underneath the continent, with only pillar like structures bearing the surface. when your meteor fell, it creates a wave through the matter as normal, ( with on the impact location at least severe damage) but the breaking of all these pillars and the weight of the continent crushing down. inside air would be forcefully expelled and water forcefully flowing over it inundating all, leaving a sea of debris/dust foam for a few years causing nature-wise a dead sea for several decades.
