Threshold CfC: Issue #20 Skothar!

Weird red metals, dominions, immortals, hollow planets, invisible moons, and a lot of glorified magic zeppelins. It's all here.

Threshold CfC: Issue #20 Skothar!

Post by Sturm » Tue Mar 13, 2018 2:48 pm

Issue 20 - Skothar
Where ancient Blackmoor once laid, the most unknown and mysterious continent of Mystara!

Image

Proposal Deadline: April 15th, 2018
Manuscript Deadline: May 15th, 2018
Issue Published: By July 21th, 2018

As we are finalizing production of issue 19 (Planes and the Immortals, to be published in April), we are now accepting proposals for issue #20 which will be focused on Skothar to be published in July!

There have been several threads about the continent recently so I hope there will be some contributors. Thorfinn recently made his map of the continent and we would be happy to publish it in the magazine too. I have my own map but more versions, more choice :)
Havard and LoZompatore certainly have some material on pre-cataclysmic Skothar.
I will also do my own article on the history and people of the continent, trying to summarize also the existing fan material.
Skothar has M-oriental cultures, the M-scythians Jennites, the M-africans Tanagoro and much more, including ruins of Blackmoor, so there is plenty of inspiration for contributors!

If you are interested in contributing, write here or to the Threshold mail which is published on the last page of any issue.
The manuscript deadline is indicative but can be extended with the editor (me), so do not worry too much!

Anticipated contents so far:

- Skothar maps
- History and people of the continent
- ?

Great, as the publication date is in July, we have some elasticity in the manuscript deadline, moreso if the contributor keeps the editor posted about progress.

Beholder city of Kargash
Beholder Breeds on Mystara and their cities

Yes sure Kargash could work well as an article already, but if you want to expand it further, even better.

I will bump this thread from time to time until April to remind people there is time to send proposals about Skothar for issue #21 of Threshold magazine!

Ok there is still time and if you keep me posted on your progress the deadline of May can be extended, as publication is in July.

Last bump, deadline would be now for proposals but articles could still be accepted if the author is confident he/she can write something by May/June. Article deadlines could be flexible if the editor (me) is keep posted, and depending also on the foreseeable amount of proofreading/image searching the article will need on my part.

Well Art has a different deadline than articles as we do not need to proofread it, but publication will be in late July, so we would need it by early July max.
Still we keep producing issues so if you cannot make it for this one there are always the next ones :-)

Thanks, this is a very nice offer, but I'll have to submit it to the whole editorial team too and let you know asap, anyway quickly. Thanks!

Well after a brief consulting, we think if you want to draw a rakasta/tiger rakasta in some kind of oriental armour/outfit, that would be perfect. I'd just avoid a classic samurai armor because this is typical of Myoshima's rakasta, but any kind of chinese armour (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_armour), dress (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_dress) or south-asia outfit (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traditional_Thai_clothing) would be perfect.
Alternatively:
- Any black/dark skinned man/woman (Tanagoro) maybe dressed in some modern African dress or Oriental-looking dress rather than an ancient African outfit.
- Any bronze-skinned horsemen (Jennites) with a vaguely Scythian outfit (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scythians)
- Any intelligent creature, human or not, with some kind of scavenged Blackmoorian tech item (you can think a bit Steampunkish here).
- Something Minaean, i.e. Greek but being a greek culture mixed with a Jennite one, it should be something vaguely Greco-Bactrian https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greco-Bactrian_Kingdom and so it may not be so easy to find good images (https://i.pinimg.com/originals/9d/f5/36 ... 939ff0.jpg)

I hope this could be enough to give you ideas, but ask any question you may have.

Do you want an Illustration of him doing something or just standing there like a picture used for next to character stats?

It would be a picture to illustrate a people of Skothar rather than a specific character illustration, so you can make him/her do whatever you like or feel inspired drawing.
You can also draw this particular NPC from Agathokles' article:
Bahadur the Brave
Pirate Lord, Sherkasta Fighter 20, C

A majestic Sherkasta with piercing black eyes, dressed in red cloth brocaded with gold, Bahadur often sports a turban kept in place by a ruby and dark red leather boots. A curved dagger and a scimitar complete his outfit.

He would be loosely inspired by the character Sandokan from classic Italian writer Emilio Salgari novel line, which you can see on Google in several illustrations and a famous movie, but Agathokles' character is not a human but a tiger rakasta (Sherkasta).

So Bahadur the Brave is a different Rakasta from the one in the Chinese-inspired armor from the first request?

Yes it's another option, choose your preferred one. The rakasta in chinese armour or dress, if you want to choose him, could be a Pardasta, a leopard rakasta, or a tiger rakasta like Bahadur.

The human with the scavanged Blackmoor tech. Where is he from?
Also the Greco-Bactrian, male/female? Warrior?

You mean you are goig to do more than one picture? I was expecting only one but obviously if you have time and will to do more you have all our gratitude and praise!

The human could be from anywhere you like. If he is from the north of Skothar, you can go with classic fantasy European-like armour/dress but with some out of place tech addendum (like a gun, or a headgear with googles, or both). If he is from the south of Skothar, he should look Tanagoro or Jennite (i.e. African or Asian or anything in between) and his/her armour/dress should be chinese/oriental-like (but not specifically japanese).

The Greco-Bactrian too could be what you prefer, I'm not sure I have examples of female greco-bactrians.. wait, sure google has scythian female dresses (https://www.google.com/search?q=scythia ... 81&bih=725) which would be very appropriate for a Jennite or Minaean woman.
