B10 Night´s Dark Terror - Did anyone DM this? PC levels?

Weird red metals, dominions, immortals, hollow planets, invisible moons, and a lot of glorified magic zeppelins. It's all here.

I ran my players through B10 about a dozen years ago when playing 3.5E, although I can't recall the exact levels the PCs were at the time. I seem to recall them being higher then recommended in Basic and had to adjust things.

I am now thinking about using B10 in my 5E game when we return to my game (we have 2 games running with 2 different DMs that we switch back and forth between). The PCs are level 6 and so I'll certainly have to make adjustments, but that's easy enough to do.

This is such a great adventure that I'm quite excited to run my players through it, even though it's been such a long time!

The big question that I always have to ask about utilizing a published module of course, is how do I lead into it from the current campaign. My last "chapter" ended with the defeat of the villain and acquiring his journal. I'm toying with the idea that they find a mini-tapestry of the one in the module and using that as the springboard. We'll see.

At the moment, I lean towards using B12 in modified form, and having the chaotic adventurer group they encounter in Kavorquians basement being an Iron Ring group, who are looking for clues in the wizards notes - maybe it is Kavorquian who knew that the tapestry is at some farmstead south of Penhaligon.

I ran again, it a few years back.
As things were, the players sharpened their teeth so to speak, on Keep on the Borderlands and Palace of the Silver Princess which we played for nostalgic reasons, originally.
And after that, they had enough good gear and levels to make it through B10.
But man, some of the monsters were pretty nasty even with experienced players and somewhat experienced characters, particularly at the end.

Start off at Lvl 3 would probably be most prudent.
Of course, you want to use it as starting point for a wider campaign, having the players start out with level 3 characters would probably be just as fine. :)

So, as my usage of B11 and B12 will be coming to a close soon (after long breaks), I´m back on track with B10. I´ve got the two 5e conversions (playing it with 5e), and the Sukyskin battle map linked elsewhere on the forum and Pandius. I gave the Iron Ring cleric in the wizards basement in B12 a letter by Golthar, sending that party towards Kavorquian in hopes that the old wizard knew anything about tapestries (or anything else that might be useful). In the meantime, the pressure on Golthar rose, and he incited the attacks as mentioned in B10.

My PCs found Golthars letter, so I´m thinking about introducing the adventure via that opening rather than a mercenary job, which most of them won´t be too inclined to take up anyways. I will probably use the idea of escorting Baron Kelvens daughter back home, as Cthulhudrew suggested earlier on this thread. And I guess that the topic of an old tapestry might just come up when a certain well-known horse breeder happens to visit the baronial master of the horses and inquires about adventurers who might be interested in helping a honest trader getting his goods to the market.

Maybe I should do a writeup of my "campaign" so far, as a possible use of these old modules.

I noticed yesterday that the very first combat in the adventure is flawed, until I missed something essential.
The PCs are supposed to be on a boat being rowed upriver on the Highreach/Volaga river, and get stopped by a chain across the river. After that, combat ensues, including some boarding action. But the boat will drift downriver again if the rowers duck inside the boat, as described in the adventure. In that way, boarding becomes impossible. I am thinking of either having the Iron Ring using a "walk-by shooting" until they run out of ammo, or an ambush at Mishas Ferry, making the chain idea obsolete.

Running it again now for a group of 4 kids, ages 12-16. Started level 1, currently level 4. Standard 5e and being generous with finding healing potions. About halfway.

Just noticed I commented on this a while back. That was a different campaign than the kids one I'm running now. That first one was part of a larger campaign, so I changed the reason they went to the farm in the first place. Just finished X12 and starting X10/WotI, currently level 5.
