The Lost City - Goodman Games Next Classic TSR Adventure Revisited

Weird red metals, dominions, immortals, hollow planets, invisible moons, and a lot of glorified magic zeppelins. It's all here.

The Lost City - Goodman Games Next Classic TSR Adventure Revisited

Post by paleologos »

Some really cool news out of GenCon - Goodman Games is turning to B4: The Lost City for the next in their OAR series!

Here is the link:
https://www.enworld.org/forum/content.p ... FQ7oH65Ngc

I've long believed that B4 deserved this kind of treatment - Mike Mearls is apparently a huge fan of the module.

Will be interesting to see how they handle it!

Very cool news!

I wonder if they will include the expansions from Dragon Magazine in the OAR book, although that might be locked in with Paizo IP?

We'll see - there's been so much material published for B4, although sounds like they'll be hewing closer to the roots.

How much has been published for B4, not counting fan works? :)

With the Isle of Dread OAR book they decided to include both versions of X1, while OAR1 included both B1 and B2. Not sure how OAR3 (Barrier Peaks) handled things, but will focusing on just one edition of one module free up more space for new contents, interviews etc?

Maybe, just maybe, Goodman game will eventually be allowed by WotC to do a 5e Mystara setting book. It would be logical after all. ;-)

Nice work Raymond!

Return to the Keep on the Borderlands and OAR1 - Into the Borderlands also had a character from the Lost City.

Wrath of the Immortals had brief writeups of the Lost City deities/Immortals.

Not sure if there was more than that? :)

I thought I'd captured everything in the B4 campaign sourcebook, but missed "Into the Unknown" - will have to check it out!

There was a brief mention of Zargon as a patron for warlocks in the Sword Coast adventurers guide, also, but I think that's it.

Cool!

There was a Zargos in the Milenia gazetteer, but I think those are unrelated.

I like these products getting new life. I get indigestion every time from the premium price tag. Plus, you can use the original module pretty much as-is. There are a few room-by-room conversion guides, including this one by me:
B4: The Lost City

The focus on deluxe products makes me somewhat hesitant about saying yes, I would like Goodman games to do a Mystara campaign book.

The next OAR to come out (#3) will be Expedition to the Barrier Peaks, release date December 19th, 2019.

The Goodman Games page announcing OAR #4: Expedition to the Barrier Peaks page only says this about The Lost City:
OAR #4: The Lost City is in the works! And it’s just the tip of the Gen Con news! Be sure to keep checking back for all the latest news!
Posted By pandabrett on Aug 10, 2019. :?

Even the Goodman Games forums haven't had any recent posts on the subject of OAR books. :(

I guess we'll be hearing more about OAR4 once OAR3 is out. :)

Hopefully. I think its kind of strange that no updates have been posted at GG site and the forums are also quiet. :?

I don't know how active that site used to be, but I've made a couple of inquiries.

Looks like GMG has a lot of projects in the works, but alot of it is for the DCC RPG for which my interest is limited (although I own a few products for it). Hopefully they will get back to the OAR stuff soon :)

I want to register at Goodman Games Forums*, but I haven't decided on a username yet. Its almost as hard as coming up with a D&D character name, and it certainly takes me much longer.

Also, finarvyn is a moderator there, so there is at least one person I know there.

(*I want to join for a couple of reasons: I'm interested in OAR support, and DCC. I love DCC but I need to see how others handle the game. I can't convince my players that it is a worthwhile game. They hate the funnel philosophy - especially running four 0-level characters knowing that ANY of them could die. )

Finally received my copy - posted a review over on Dragonsfoot:

https://www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/view ... 38&t=84452

I think they did a good job! Not a lot of references to Mystara, but the adventure can really be used in almost any campaign world.

Sounds like a very well designed product. B4 was my second module purchase. Lots of interesting ideas. The idea of starting in the lost city is very exciting. I can see this as a way to connect low level PC with an Antiquity setting in a novel.

I might buy this book in 2021 or ask for it as a Christmas gift! ;-)

Thanks for writing this review! There seems to be more than enough good stuff in here to justify me buying a copy. Amazon still lists it as ready for pre-order. How were you (and some others I have seen) able to get a copy so early? :)

I am a bit disappointed that the authors didn't delve more deeply into the greater connections to The Known World (Mystara). I think there could be potential here to develop the surface lands in Ylaruam, for instance.

I do like the expansion of the locations dedicated to the Immortals of Cynidicea and the expansion on Zargon. I am particularly interested in this planar location connected to Zargon.

There are also some really good fan expansion to the setting at the Vaults of Pandius.

I had pre-ordered it a while ago, but I think they started shipping in late June (it was originally going to be released June 15). I was happy to see that it arrived.

There's a good section on desert encounters, but nothing Mystara-specific. I think they concentrated on the lost civilization itself, as opposed to which desert it was in. As much of a Mystara fan as I am, I didn't feel it suffered for lack of the setting information (kind of like the original module!)

The expansions of the faction strongholds was nicely done. The other extraplanar location is less connected to Zargon, specifically.
