Back by popular demand, look for the next RPGA campaign starting in spring 2007: Living Hollow World. Fans of this unique setting can expect a triumphant return to the strange world-within-the-world… including the pikemen of the Milenian Empire, the mysterious pyramids of the Nithians, and the strong and savage Azcans! In 2007, the known world isn’t flat—but it is hollow!
Yes, that certainly backfired.

I don't know if anyone's attempting a Mystara campaign with the Pathfinder rules in this day and age (or ever), but I thought I'd make a post here. A number of monsters in the Pathfinder Bestiary 6 could be adapted to Mystara; the various fey could fit in one or another of Mystara's faerie courts, the outer planar creatures could be stuck in one or another of Mystara's many outer planes, the various Lovecraftian creatures could be servitors of the Outer Beings, etc. But here's a quick list of things that seemed more specifically Mystaran (though I'm still pretty loose in my interpretation of what might fit).

Alp: CN fey who haunt dreams. Found in the Dimension of Nightmare?

Atuikakura: A gargantuan aquatic worm. Similar to BECMI's sea leviathan.

Blight: Intelligent oozes created by ancient reptilian druids, which turned against their creators. Cave blights are radioactive. In Mystara they could be remnants of the Great Rain of Fire, and/or created by the carnifex.

Blood bramble: Similar to BECMI's vampire roses (X2 Castle Amber).

Boggart: Corrupted brownies, depicted with calves' heads.

Bonethorn: These are plants, though they resemble undead. Similar to BECMI's dusanu, complete with spore attack.

Clockworks: Could be remnants of ancient Blackmoor, closer to the time of Uther than the high technology of its later centuries.

Dinosaurs: Hollow World, Isle of Dread.

Fen Mauler: Corrupted sasquatches.

Giant, Mountain:
Unlike the BECMI creatures, this version is chaotic evil.

Gluttongrass: Similar to BECMI's grab grass (X2 Castle Amber) but also they feed on blood.

Golem, Obsidian: There's a BECMI creature by this name.

Great Old Ones: Conceptually similar to the Outer Beings that appear in some fan works.

Munavri: Subterranean, albino humans. They're telepathic and they can read objects. Could be used as Cynidiceans?

Naga, Dream: Could be inhabitants of the Dimension of Nightmare.

Oblivion: Negative energy creatures with the power to command spheres of annihilation. Could be lords among the blackballs.

Qlippoth, Utukku: This utukku is very different from the utukku found in the Savage Coast Monstrous Compendium Appendix.

Rougarou: Wolf-headed humanoids (like BECMI's lupins) who can transform into wolves. They hate werewolves.

Sahkil: Corrupted psychopomps who personify various mortal fears. They live in the Ethereal Plane. These don't correspond to anything Mystaran, but they're tied to the psychopomps, who have a place in Mystara's Limbo, and Mystara has an Ethereal Plane, so...

Slithering pit: Imagine a portable hole that slithers around, trying to eat you. Probably found in the slummier parts of Glantri City, an unintended consequence of the magical experiments performed by the wizards there.

Yeah, thanks. I'd originally composed that as an independent post titled "Pathfinder Bestiary 6 and Mystara," changed my mind and added it to this thread. I went back and edited my earlier post to make more sense.

  • Tales from the Yawning Portal (Chokers, Nereid, Siren)
Not sure which of the Nereid or Siren best represent Mystara's Nixies? Chokers first appeared in D&D form in the Rockhome Gazetteer.

Much obliged to Robin for pointing this out in my Savage Tide threads...
Robin wrote:Did you now by the way that tsr09377 - AD&D2E.-.Treasure.Maps.GR3. also has a map using the Isle of Dread as a treasure map at the end of that collection of maps; The text is somewhat earlier; "Waterhole"?

Here the text
Waterhole
Players' Information
This map has been burned into a piece of driftwood, probably with a hot piece of metal. Whoever made it must have been without paper, ink, or any of the other standard writing utensils. Still, however makeshift his or her tools, the map-maker has left behind a careful record that anyone could easily follow.
The Rumors
· The island depicted on the map was used as a hide-out for a small band of pirates. Here they could store their loot until they could melt the precious metals into ingots, impossible to trace or identify as stolen goods. The pirates died ten years ago when their ship hit a hidden reef and went down; the plunder from their last raid was never recovered.
Even though the pirates are dead, the island itself is extremely dangerous to approach. Anyone deciding to run a salvage team down to the sunken ship would be well advised not to go ashore, and to carry out all diving operations at night, when the island's inhabitants cannot see.
· A noble used to do a lot of sailing off the southern continent in search of slaves, contraband, and entertainment. He never returned from his last trip; presumably, his ship floundered in a storm or struck a reef in unfamiliar waters. His family is willing to pay thousands of gold pieces for the remains of their ancestor so that his bones can be buried properly.
· There are two copies of this map: the true map, which leads to a sunken ship filled with treasure, and a false map, which leads to a nearby kraken's lair. The only difference between the two maps is that the real map has a reef shaped like a snake in the southwest corner.
· The plunder in the sunken schooner is guarded by a salt-water poltergeist that will not let anyone
or anything near its treasure. This undead spirit controls the actions of a colony of nearby merrows.
So Isle of Dread did make it into 2E, to my surprise. That means it has made it into every edition of the game except for 1E.

Wow, that is a really good catch! The Isle of Dread is never mentioned in the book and the map is flipped 90 degrees, but it is definitely the Isle of Dread. The reference to the Southern Continent is obviously a reference to Davania. :)

I wonder what a salt water poltergeist is and how they might be different from other poltergeists! :)

Based on that, it should be set in Karameikos after the fall of Baron von Hendriks.

The link to the original Night of the Straw Men seems no longer valid - I´m getting an error message.
Although a web search yielded this: https://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=d ... 2F20080507 Should be the same link, but this one worked for me.

EDIT: Ah, the link I found is a https-link, that might make a difference.

Many of the links don't work anymore. When WotC changed the web site, it seems tons of urls got changed.

Just a heads up that Beneath the Keep was not originally intended to be part of OAR1...
NPCDave wrote:

Yesterday was Free RPG Day, and I visited a couple of game stores in the area and picked up some of the freebies being offered.

One of those was from Goodman Games....
http://goodman-games.com/blog/2018/06/1 ... e-rpg-day/

And if you look on that page, one of the two offerings they had for the day was a 5E adventure called Beneath the Keep.

I am leafing through it today and I realized, yeah, it is that keep, the Keep on the Borderlands. It doesn't explicitly link to their B1-2 offering, but all the relevant references to the nearby caves and evil temple are there along with the Keep itself which is where this mini-adventure takes place.
It was always planned as a separate release for Free RPG Day to help promote OAR1. Goodman Games just recently offered it for sale but it was first made available in June 2018 for the Free RPG Day promotion.
