AGE guide for Mystara

Weird red metals, dominions, immortals, hollow planets, invisible moons, and a lot of glorified magic zeppelins. It's all here.

AGE guide for Mystara

Post by siroh » Fri Jun 11, 2010 2:51 pm

Hi folks,
As I mentioned months ago in an unrelated post, I am working on a conversion guide to use the Dragon Age roleplaying game rules with the Mystara setting, as none of the rules are in my opinion is overly specific to the setting in the box. I am still working on the adaptations to fit a D&D high fantasy feel and haven't posted any mystaran specific backgrounds yet. The impetus has been to convert in spirit, since I always seem to run Mystara unless I have overwhelming requests for something else when I run a fantasy game and it's not my own world.

I saw the scope of the project I'm working on to just be a toolkit for someone who already owns gazetteers or at least has a detailed overview or modules to draw upon. However, as I tend to think of the luminaries on this board as potential audience, I'd like to hear opinions on how much setting overview should be included in such an effort.

You can find what I've already worked on here:
http://www.greenronin.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=8605

For those who don't know anything about the game it's a class based system that utilizes 3d6 and a roll over mechanic. Instead of critical hits there are stunts which occur more frequently than rolling a 20 on a d20, and a unique way of handling expertise based on attributes. All in all it's fairly simple, clean, and has a feel reminiscent of the best parts of Basic D&D and more recent systems.

Sounds interesting. I have yet to pick up Dragon Age, but I have been thinking about it. Green Ronin generally produce high quality stuff :)

I've read most of the thread, the ideas seem sound. Do you have an idea of how the Cleric class would look like -- the absence of the Cleric seems the major gap to bridge between OD&D and Dragon Age, as least as long as human and demihuman classes are involved.

Yes. There is a link to my cleric class thread in the second post of the thread. Here is the direct link: http://www.greenronin.com/phpBB2/viewto ... 6098#86098 I was suggested to consolidate everything after I had begun. There are also some example divine spells in a post linked from the main thread.

I too started working on something similar, and I handled the cleric essentially as a background for the mage class.

I couldn't go this route because I am trying to map backgrounds as race/culture and Mystara has way too many cultures of even the same race to fit training in as well, as Dragon Age proper does it. I also adhere to an internal rule that a variant class or build should depend on few core modifications, and leave the basic powers intact. It's the main reason I created a full Mystic class yesterday. I had been using Talents, but when I saw I had 4 talents it seemed to be too much shoehorning.

You Cleric class seems good, indeed.

Keep us posted on this work!

It's been a while, but I tinkered out a few more adversary entries so I posted about a page worth. I've also revised the basilisk to truly flesh to stone petrify, but I haven't posted that one yet, nor the beholder. Other entries to come include giant toad, doppelganger, caecilia, goblin, aranea, glaurant, griffon, lizardfolk, owlbear and my first stab at the vampire.

This is a link to the second page with the additions.

WOW!

Looks extremely impressive Byron! I love the illustrations in the Immortals section in particular!

Thanks for the kind words. It was a lot of work, but more in the writing and editing than layout. In the end I just had to decide to stop tweaking it.

I've been on the edge over Dragon Age, which you have just pushed me over. I'm going to have to buy it when finances allow now.

Wow! Great work! This is definitely a major step towards making Dragon Age a true replacement for OD&D.

P.S.: one nitpick: the etnonym used for the desert people of the Emirates is spelled "Alasiyan".

Thanks, I can't use spellcheck on fantasy names and I didn't catch that in editing. I'll be overwriting the document with the edited version soon. Just redownload later if you want the new version.

What kind of software did you use for the layout? The result is spectacular :)

I use a mac and I used Apple Pages '09 for the actual layout. I used Literature and Latte's previous version of Scrivener to collect my thoughts and write, and I used various image related programs (Apple Preview, Pixelmator, Inkscape) for the graphical elements.

Scrivener is an awesome program -- I haven't yet moved my work from there over to Pages for true laying out. Seeing what you've been able to accomplish gives me high hopes for an eventual PDF release of Thorn's Chronicle, as well as the accompanying adventure modules.

Pages is extremely powerful for an inexpensive layout program. It can be frustrating, but it can also be pretty satisfying. Just about the only things you wish you had InDesign for you realize would mean you'd have to put up with more frustration for a host of other things.

Best tip they don't tell you anywhere is that if you use a PNG with transparent background, it will wrap to the exact dimensions every time. If you take an image with a white background and try to do the same using Instant Alpha, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, depending on the shape of the image itself.

Let me know if you want the Mystara pages template. I do have a color page version included in the template, I just didn't use it because I decided on black and white art, and the images mesh better with a white background.

Fantastic work, siroh! Such a nice surprise to be able to 'flip' through a new Mystara book on this Monday morning!

Brilliant work!
I had started a similar effort, but then I lost steam and left it, and I sold the game for lack of interest.

I've had similar stumbling blocks with packaging up my original settings before. This time I decided to make a guide for my players that would encompass just enough setting for them to make characters or ask to borrow a gazetteer. I think it's been the right choice so far.
