Any 3.0 or 3.5 D&D rules for Pearl Diving?

Postby NPCDave » Tue Oct 08, 2013 8:31 pm

Granted, not the most common of professions, but with the plethora of OGL materials out there perhaps someone recalls rules for pearl diving/scavenging?

If not I suppose a decent approach would be to make it a profession check, with either dex or con as a bonus modifier. Circumstance bonuses for magic spells and items that help with swimming and water breathing.

Swimming prof paired with knowledge: coral reefs? Perhaps boating & weather sense, too.

In this case, I'd set up a sliding scale for which characters must make Swim and Search checks, with the combined results determining what they find. Alternately, Survival (especially with the Track feat) could be used in place of Search. This reflects how one must be able to swim down to the depths and seek out the pearl oysters. If you're interested, I introduced a pretty specific prestige class on my blog, the diver.

I'd go with Swim checks and Survival checks, and grant synergy from K/nature.

I'd ignore the Track feat and similar-named class ability; oyster-bearing molluscs aren't noted for their high speeds, and water currents would remove any possible trail long before they had moved more than a few feet.

I'd also ignore the Search skill; Survival makes more sense in terms of identifying the physical characteristics of an individual oyster that is likely to contain a pearl, and once you open a mollusc, the pearl, if present, is very obvious.

Thanks for all the help guys. I incorporated some of your suggestions and provide more detail on that in my Savage Tide thread on the Mystara forum.
